Meet Alex Buhlig

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Buhlig. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alex, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I think there are a few things that I do that ; first surrounding yourself with the right people helps keep the fire alive tremendously. Obviously the guys in Sight of Theia are a big part of that. I am constantly taking inspiration from the way they write their parts or the knowledge they posses about their specific instrument. In addition the Atlanta music scene is full of opportunities to collaborate and jam with musicians outside of your genre which can give you another lens at which to look at your music.

I think seeking out new things that inspire you is a big part of it as well. We’ve recently begun working with a vocalist which adds a whole new layer to our music and helps inspire creativity amongst ourselves.

Lastly, I think striving to create every day I am not working on a film set helps tremendously. Even if I’m just going through the motions it helps to have something to work with later. For example, even if I am not super happy with the riff, song, or idea I come up with I can always go back and revise or change things until I am. Charles, Bill, and Ricky, can absolutely attest to how many revisions some of our songs go through.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Sight of Theia is a progressive metal band based in Atlanta Georgia that has been active since 2018. The current line up has been active since 2020. Our sound is heavy, but melodic, reminiscent of bands like Meshuggah, Mastodon, and Tool. For much of our gigging tenure we’ve been an instrumental band but have recently begun experimenting with adding singer, Jack Wachtel, to the mix which in my opinion adds a level of accessibility to the project that is extremely intriguing.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three things I think have helped me the most on my journey as a band leader would be;

-Musicianship: obviously you can’t be a bandleader without playing something, but I wouldn’t say I am the ‘best’ musician in the band by any means. I think I have a functional knowledge of many things but also know when to pull back and just let the guys I collaborate with do their thing because they all have their strengths and I would be a fool not to let them shine in that regard. I think a lot of the responsibility of a band leader of original music lies in being able to do that and taking care of some of the more mundane things like transcribing the tunes.

– Business sense: Knowing how to interface with venues, promoters, booking agents, press and other bands is apart of it too. I can thank my film career for teaching me how to communicate clearly and professionally in that regard.

– People skills: this ties into the first thing but people skills and knowing how to manage people is I think the biggest and most challenging aspect of being a band leader. It is also the most rewarding. I’ve found developing the empathy muscle is the key in managing people. Understanding where someone is at creatively, emotionally, or financially are all very important. Knowing how to communicate where you are at in a respectful way that doesn’t feel like an attack is also important to keeping the good times coming.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We’re always looking for new opportunities to get our music out there. Whether its playing live, collaborations, press, or multimedia platforms.
