We were lucky to catch up with Alex Clouz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think you’re born with resilience but you can also train it and develop it.
When I decided to go make a name for myself in the music industry. I knew it would be hard. i didn’t go in it naively.
Every person I look up to or every person that is worth looking up to usually had to face failure and rejection in order to become the person they are. It is just part of the learning process.
When I started this journey I slowly started looking for failure. I think that if you’re not failing it means that you’re not trying hard enough. So instead of trying to get everything right, I tried to look for failure and take it as a learning experience.
Every time someone is facing failure or rejection they have 2 choice, let it get to you or let it fuel you. I try to always stay on the fuel side of this choice.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Alex Clouz, a Music Producer, Composer and Sound Designer. I started a music production company specialized in writing music for TV, ads, as well as producing artists.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the chance to work on numerous exciting projects.
I recently worked on a Fiverr ad campaign starring Martha Stewart. Working with celebrities is always a pleasure. Working on their other campaign starring Bobby Berk was also very exciting. I was asked to compose some groovy music centered around funk and disco. It was really fun.
Another major part of what I do is write for TV. If you like sports, there’s a good chance you heard my music on CBS Sports for the NFL or during an NCAA game and during some MLB shows.
I also work with distinguished artist such as Nomé Naku and Eva Rawlings.
And another one my activities is working throughout live events with international brands like L’Oréal and Tech For Retail to play a critical role within their productions overseeing their sound design or music.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think that the 3 most important skills are: Consistency, Reliability and Versatility.
You have to be extremely consistent with any new venture before starting to see results and success. Everything is always harder than it seems. It takes time. I had to be persistent before people would give me opportunities like scoring an ad starring Martha Stewart or working with L’Oréal on the sound design for their keynote speech.
Opportunities like those ones are not available to every artist, to be afforded such jobs it was critical that I had established a name for myself in the industry as a successful and respected professional.
You also have to be extremely reliable. When you’re in charge of the music for major projects, everything will fall apart if you don’t deliver. The people you work with have to be totally sure that you’re going to deliver. There can’t be room for uncertainty. For example, for the 2024 Ad campaign of the clothing brand Sombre, I was the only person in charge of the music and the sound design, if I wasn’t delivering the project would have gone really bad. Reliability is essential to any serious professional in this industry, especially the music industry.
Versatility is also extremely important. Some projects will require very different skillsets. For example when I scored the Martha Stewart ads, I had to compose music in 3 different genres. And then they asked me to make the sound design for their logo. I had to be proficient in all those genres but also be able to make the sound design required for their logo.
For my TV work, one day I’m asked to write hip-hop music for the NFL and a few days later I’m asked to write heartbreak songs for the TV show “Love Island UK”. Versatility is essential nowadays.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client, whether it’s an artist or a brand, is someone reliable who can articulate their vision. I love working with people that are always on top of what’s happening.
This is why I love working with companies such as Droid Mafia, Left, BMGPM, Bleeding Fingers, Boost Music and more.
They’re very well known and respected companies in the industry and it is because they know what they want, they’re reliable, professional and always on top of what they do.
When it comes to artists, I love working with Nomé Naku, she’s a very driven and serious artist with a clear vision of what she’s doing. You don’t find artists like that around every corner.
