We were lucky to catch up with Alex Cordova recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding My Creativity and Purpose through the Magic Oil Box:
Growing up in the Inland Empire as a closeted LGBTQ+ individual was challenging, but movies provided solace. Every Friday, my mother and I would visit the video store and rent films like “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” and “Tremors,” which served as an escape and provided unexpected insights. As I matured, my love for horror films grew, and became my go-to escape from reality. Additionally, I discovered my passion for Aromatherapy as an adult.
Despite being naturally creative and outgoing, I had been ignoring my artistic side for years, focusing solely on my corporate job. It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that I was able to reawaken creatively and founded The Magic Oil Box LLC.
We’re not your average aromatherapy company. Our custom blends draw inspiration from our favorite horror flicks, Our products offer the perfect balance between relaxation and horror.

The Magic Oil Box: A Unique Business with a Horrifyingly Good Concept
The Magic Oil Box is a business venture born out of my love for horror movies. As a child, these movies were my safe haven to explore societal issues, and today, they have become a cultural phenomenon with millions of followers.
Inspired by Giles’s purchase of “The Magic Box” in season five of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I created The Magic Oil Box in 2021. In just under three years, our business has achieved tremendous success.
Our aromatherapy blends are designed to improve your overall well-being and are connected to the characters and movies that inspired them. For instance, our Stephen King’s “Carrie” inspired products are all about improving focus. Whether you possess the power of telekinesis or need a boost before your school exams, our Carrie-themed products help you focus your power and energy.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my personal journey, there are three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that stand out as having the most impact. Firstly, my love for horror movies has taught me a lot about the power of storytelling, and how a single movie can impact your life. I have always been drawn to the genre because of its ability to evoke strong emotions and create a sense of suspense, but also belonging. This has translated into how I approach my own creative projects, always striving to create a compelling narrative that captures the audience’s attention.
Secondly, my attention to detail has been a crucial aspect of my success. I have always been meticulous when it comes to planning and executing tasks, ensuring that every aspect is considered and nothing is overlooked. This has allowed me to consistently produce high-quality work and has been invaluable in my professional life.
Finally, my strong work ethic has been a defining characteristic throughout my journey. I have always been willing to put in the time and effort necessary to achieve my goals, whether that be through studying, practicing, or working. This has enabled me to overcome challenges and persevere in the face of adversity.
Overall, these three qualities have played a significant role in shaping who I am today, and I am grateful for the lessons they have taught me.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Currently my biggest challenge is having the capitol to continue to grow and expand as an aromatherapy business. With extra funds, the business is positioned to acquire bulk materials, and get the attention we need to expand. Our aspiration is to open a physical shop and become the primary destination for horror and aromatherapy products. Horror fans are a loyal bunch and they cherish discovering unique items themed after their favorite films and figures. With determination and hard work, I am confident that my business will eventually overcome this obstacle and reach its full potential.
I have also been focusing on building a strong online presence through social media and email marketing to increase brand awareness and attract more customers. Additionally, I am constantly looking for ways to streamline operations and cut costs without compromising on the quality of our products. By staying committed to our vision and values, I believe we can overcome this obstacle and continue to grow our business in a sustainable and impactful way.
