Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Leon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
And a child I grew up with my mother and my little brother and some very unfortunate circumstances. Of the 17 years that I lived at home we lived in homeless shelters and homeless housing for 16 and a half years. I remembered what it was like not celebrating holidays like other kids, I remembered what it’s like not having things and I remember hoarding small dollars here and there to help support family. As a child I found myself incredibly grateful for all of the people that helped us but really never knew what else there was out there. As a teenager and then a young adult I knew that I wanted to bring children into this world and to make sure that they never wanted for anything, I wanted to make sure that my children had a Christmas every year that was filled with joy and excitement. I knew that I wanted to work for something that was much bigger than myself and that I wanted to give others joy from that hard work. I know this all might seem very cheesy but giving has always been my love language and the feeling of happiness that I got from giving to others always made me remember the gratefulness I had when others helped my family as we struggled through my childhood

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own a business called Weddings Unlimited. We do photography, videography, day of coordination, DJs, and photo booths for weddings all over Texas and Arizona. We find it so incredibly invigorating to be a part of our couples whole wedding day and to learn about them for months and months before we even get to meet them, the build up is incredible and our knowledge of their story and their love is so much fun. We then get to go to their biggest celebration of their lives and capture their day, we create epic fun moments and then capture them with our photographers and videographers. While doing all of this we get to tell the story of this new chapter in their lives and be a part of the first day of the rest of their lives. Frequently I find myself spending hours scrolling through customer photo galleries from the previous weekends weddings and immersing myself in the feeling as if I was there with them for the whole process

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
After doing this for 14 years I definitely realized that having a passion for something that you do is such a strong factor into success. But one of the biggest things that I’ve noticed that has been a strength for me personally is the ability to act like a sponge, the ability to learn things from other people even if they weren’t realizing that they were teaching. You don’t know what you don’t know and the key is to acknowledge that you don’t know. Lastly we have found a lot of success in clearly defining what our “North” was and then living to those standards, we created company values and we hired based on people that showed those company values in their lives personally and in business. It’s very hard to turn a switch on and off so if we live our company values on a daily basis with our friends and family then when we come to work we can live those values in the workplace and it doesn’t feel uncomfortable or forced

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I find that going all in is just something that comes naturally for me, sometimes too much so. I find myself looking back and laughing at some crazy decisions I’ve made because I never do anything small. I think that learning to temper that would be wise at times but then it wouldn’t make me who I am. I strive every day to learn how to go all in but not necessarily in the same way that I have in the past. It’s definitely true that as you get older you get wiser, we look back at our mistakes and do everything we can to not let them jade us but instead do what we can to let them teach us and help us make the right decisions the second time around, or the third or the 4th. I definitely think that if you’re not going to commit to something then there’s no reason to try it, learning optionality hearing other people’s opinions and then understanding that no matter what there are things you haven’t thought about and there are circumstances that will come up that will change the trajectory of the entire plan. I’ve learned that God will help you get from A to z it’s just not necessarily a straight path in between
