Meet Alex Luster

We were lucky to catch up with Alex Luster recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I had to dig for this answer, but I realized my purpose by connecting the dots. It is to tell stories through video and photography, highlighting unique narratives by everyday people from all walks of life. Today, I co-own The Storyhive, where we create documentaries and animations for various clients.

My path started back in 1987, when I was a gullible 9-year-old and got a toy camera from a Burger King kid’s meal. It was a small pocket film camera that I carried everywhere. That little camera sparked a lifelong passion for visual storytelling.

Growing up in a diverse neighborhood in Houston, I was surrounded by many different backgrounds and viewpoints. My dad was born in the US at the end of World War II, and my mom is from a small town in Mexico. This blend of cultures gave me a unique perspective. Summers in Mexico helped me connect with my mom’s heritage, while my dad’s American traditions offered another worldview. My family, neighborhood, schools, and summer breaks across the border exposed me to various ways of life, values, languages, and many genres of music. These experiences inspired me to capture and share these narratives.

Over the last 10 years, The Storyhive has become a hub for impactful storytelling. We produce interview-based documentaries highlighting remarkable individuals and important causes for large companies and non-profits. Community involvement is also very important to me. As a board member for two local non-profits related to filmmaking and media, I support local creatives. These roles allow me to give back and help others find their voice, perfectly fitting my purpose of inspiring value through storytelling.

Ultimately, I aim to share unique narratives that help people grow and appreciate the richness of different backgrounds. Through The Storyhive and my community work, I strive to make a lasting impact and encourage creativity and inclusivity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

At The Storyhive, we craft visually stunning and unforgettable videos that resonates with diverse audiences. As a co-owner, I specialize in production and post-production, particularly editing. We collaborate with a wide range of clients, including individuals, companies, and non-profits, to create interview-based documentaries that shine a light on unique stories and important causes.

In addition to my work at The Storyhive, I serve as a board member for two local non-profits in filmmaking and media, where I support local creatives in finding their voice.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three essential qualities that help me – adaptability, storytelling, and community engagement.

Adaptability means being able to adjust to new situations. This has been crucial because the way we create and consume media is always changing. Whether it’s learning new technologies or changing plans during projects, being adaptable has kept me relevant and effective. My advice is to stay curious and open to learning. Regularly update your skills and be willing to step out of your comfort zone to try new things.

Storytelling has been the cornerstone of my work at The Storyhive. Telling compelling, authentic stories helps connect with audiences. Practice storytelling in different ways, writing, photography and producing videos. Focus on being genuine and making an emotional connection in your stories.

Being involved in the community has enriched my professional and personal life. Get involved in your community by volunteering, joining local groups, or attending events related to your interests. Building relationships and giving back helps others and creates a supportive network that can be very valuable in your journey.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents had a big impact, by giving me exposure to many different experiences and cultures. My diverse upbringing taught me to appreciate and understand people from all walks of life. It inspired me to tell untold stories, which is a big part of what I do today with The Storyhive.
