Meet Alex Manitopyes

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Manitopyes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.

Hi Alex, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I found my purpose through a deeply personal journey intertwined with my culture and the stories of my ancestors. My traditional last name means Sacred Thunderbird/being. Growing up in Mohkinstsis (Calgary, Alberta), I was influenced by the traditions of my Indigenous background, which sparked my passion for fashion and the desire to express my identity. As a non-binary/trans masc individual, I began to understand the power of art as a means of storytelling and truth-telling. This realization became particularly poignant when I created the Amber Alert Collection, which allowed me to address the painful legacy of Indian Residential Schools. Through that collection, I was able to honor the names of children who suffered and bring attention to their stories, using fashion as a platform for healing and awareness. My purpose crystallized when I recognized that I could use my designs to celebrate Indigenous culture and advocate for those who have been silenced. Each piece I create is a reflection of my journey, my community, and the truths that need to be shared. It’s about blending contemporary fashion with meaningful narratives, ultimately creating a space for inclusivity, diversity, and ancestral healing. This journey has shown me that through art, we can connect, heal, and inspire change.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am the founder and designer of SACRD THNDR, an Indigenous-owned luxury brand that beautifully merges contemporary fashion with Indigenous culture. My journey as a fashion designer began with a desire to express my identity as a non-binary/trans-masc individual while honouring my roots and Ancestors. Through SACRD THNDR, I create pieces that reflect the diverse narratives of Indigenous communities, incorporating symbols, patterns, and stories into each design. What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to celebrate our culture and to use fashion as a platform for storytelling and advocacy. Each collection, like the Amber Alert Collection, carries deep significance and addresses important social issues. The ability to engage in conversations about cultural identity, healing, and resilience through my art is incredibly special to me. I am also passionate about inclusivity and accessibility in fashion, ensuring that my designs resonate with people from all walks of life. The accessories I create, such as lightweight acrylic earrings, are designed for everyone to wear, embodying a blend of tradition and modernity. Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to announce that SACRD THNDR continues to grow, with plans for new collections that further explore themes of identity and cultural expression. There are also exciting events on the horizon, as I look to participate in more fashion weeks and collaborative projects that amplify Indigenous voices in the industry. Ultimately, SACRD THNDR is not just about fashion; it’s a celebration of identity, a platform for cultural awareness, and a commitment to honouring the stories of our ancestors while creating a brighter future. I invite everyone to join me on this journey as we embrace the essence of our creations together.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back on my journey, the three most impactful qualities are resilience, creativity, and cultural awareness. 1. Resilience: The fashion industry can be challenging, and there have been moments of doubt and setbacks. Developing resilience has allowed me to navigate these obstacles, learn from failures, and keep pushing forward. For those early in their journey, I advise embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Building a support network of mentors and peers who uplift you can also provide the encouragement needed to persevere.
2. Creativity: My ability to think outside the box and innovate has been crucial in establishing SACRD THNDR and creating meaningful designs. To enhance creativity, I recommend exploring various forms of art and expression, whether through fashion, visual arts, or storytelling. Engage with diverse perspectives and let inspiration flow from your environment and cultural heritage. Don’t be afraid to experiment and take risks with your ideas.
3. Cultural Awareness: Understanding and honouring my Indigenous roots has been at the core of my work. It’s essential to recognize the significance of your background and how it shapes your creative voice. I encourage others to immerse themselves in their cultural narratives and learn from their histories. This knowledge not only enriches your work but also provides a deeper connection to the stories you wish to tell through your art. For those starting their journey, my advice is to stay true to yourself and your values. Embrace your unique perspective, and don’t shy away from sharing your story. Surround yourself with supportive communities, seek feedback, and remain open to learning. Remember, every step you take is part of a larger journey, and each experience contributes to your growth as an artist and individual.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

In the past 12 months, my biggest growth area has been my confidence as a designer and leader within the fashion industry. Participating in events like Milan Fashion Week and showcasing the Amber Alert Collection pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to fully embrace my identity and vision. I’ve learned to trust my instincts more and to express my artistic voice unapologetically. This journey has involved stepping into the spotlight, sharing my story, and advocating for the significance of Indigenous narratives in fashion. As I engaged with audiences and fellow designers, I realized the importance of using my platform to raise awareness about cultural issues and to connect with others who share similar passions. My growth has extended to building a stronger network within the fashion community. Collaborating with various artists and designers has developed my perspective and opened doors for new opportunities. This has taught me the value of collaboration and the power of collective creativity. Overall, this year has been transformative, helping me cultivate a deeper sense of purpose and commitment to my work. I’m excited to continue this journey of growth, pushing boundaries, and inspiring others through my designs and the stories they tell.
