Meet Alex Puryear

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Puryear . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.

Alex, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

It starts with being humble towards yourself and understanding your capabilities as a creative, and allowing yourself to constantly keep growing and learning different and new strategies and techniques. Cause I believe as you grow as a creative, you grow as a person.
And in regards to the physical it’s practice not every piece or drawing that you make needs to be a masterpiece. Sometimes your brain just needs to exercise a little bit making doodles, circles, shapes, etc. eventually your mind allows the creative part to translate that into a work of art.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an artist my work explores mixed media material that are subjected not only to the weight and gravity of the physical world but also escaping into the surrealist realm. My approach and evocative scenes features faces and gestures collided to creating a dream perception of another world ,color choices and experimental painterly gestures/technics help with the juxtaposition of each piece. Overall, my work explores the universal experience of existing in various artistic styles I continue to push myself creatively whether it’s doing live visual art /live jazz sessions with my residency at Fulton Street Collective (Chicago)
Or the occasional visits to various galleries, museums throughout the city.
I continue to never start learning on different ways to express or create learning new techniques, exploring different mediums, and figuring out ways to merge it with the other arsenals that I have in my creative bag..

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful qualities and skills that I’ve learned through this journey is to stay focused. Stay in your lane understanding that not every road is meant to be traveled. Just because you may see your peers doing greater does not mean that formula is for you. Your talent makes you who you are as you develop and sharpen your skills. You will also develop a “signature”.. Never to give up. You will probably hear more No’s than yes. That doesn’t mean for you to throw in a towel or stop. It should convert you to drive even harder and also be optimistic about what you create. Sometimes your work that you develop is not meant for the now. You may be creating something for the future of viewers.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area growth and improvement ,This past year has definitely been staying true to myself and not following suit or chasing the bag as one would say. Letting go of the things that you can’t control. Trusting that process..Being able to develop a balance , and maintain my artistic drive, also, the improvement quality I find pretty interesting is not being too hard on myself in my creative application  Learning to let go and not be as structured ,more loose in organic in my direction.
