Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Rizzi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I felt different as a kid. While other children were busy running and playing sports, I preferred to explore my imagination. And while I did have friends, some adults labeled me as shy or withdrawn. All I knew was that I wasn’t like most of my peers.
By the time I was in middle school, I noticed that my classmates would reach out to me in moments of distress or confusion or heartbreak. I remember feeling honored to be the unofficial life coach of my 7th grade class. I enjoyed listening to my friends and offering whatever wisdom I could at age 13, (which was probably not much, but we do the best we can with what we have right?)
In high school, I was told to choose a “realistic” career path. Psychology and education were the closest ones I could find to match my deep desire to be of service to growth in others (and myself).
In college, I discovered I was smart. I never realized this before since the particular brand of intelligence I had didn’t seem to fit the mold of what the traditional US education system values. But in college, I got to explore, to question, and to wonder. I got to expand rather than contract to fit into a box that felt way too small. This is where the seeds of possibility were first planted in me that there might be more to life beyond the linear path I had been sold.
Upon graduation, I took a teaching job and quickly found my soul screaming for more. “More freedom, more creativity, more self-expression, deeper service, you are here on a mission, there’s more.”
So, from the ages of 22-35, I bounced back and forth between two worlds: The practical and the spiritual. I learned therapeutic modalities and energetic ones. I took teaching jobs and social work jobs. I learned psychology and energy healing, hypnotherapy, and meditation. Back and forth, back and forth, until, step by step, I began to integrate them all.
In 2019 I was in a job that looked great on paper but felt like a too-tight sweater: Stiffling, stagnant, old. When the pandemic hit and my position was eliminated I had a choice: Take another job in the company or a severance package.
I took the severance.
And suddenly I was on a new path, faced with a new question: What do I ACTUALLY want to do?
Up until this point my career had been one of the biggest pain points in my life: I just knew I was meant for something bigger, but I couldn’t see a path towards it. Every job felt too small and everything outside of a job felt too big.
So I started to follow my excitement. I took courses and learned modalities that I was curious about. And where they led me seems so obvious now: Holistic career coaching.
Duh.
Not only does it combine all of the areas I’ve already studied, but I also get to include the spiritual and energetic sides of me too.
The biggest lesson I learned (and continue to learn), is that including all parts of myself in my work is what I’m here for, even if I don’t see anyone else approaching it the same way. Because part of my mission is to forge a new path – one that is uniquely mine. And then help my clients do the same.
Most career coaches focus only on the business of getting a new and better job or starting and growing a business. What I do is help people understand their soul map, and clear out any internal blocks standing in the way of them living into it. And from there, we take action.
In truth, this is what my younger self needed for all those years when I felt so lost and stuck. I knew I was here for a bigger purpose but believed I would never be able to live into that. If you’re reading this and it resonates, I want you to know that it is possible for you too.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
After 5 years as a holistic career coach, I recently joined forces with my amazing business partner, Kellyn Bechtold. Together, we recently launched a new venture called The Career Coven.
In The Career Coven, we gather together to help people build soul maps and road maps to a free, fulfilling future. We believe in the power of authenticity over hustle, of ease over grind, and the fact that when we follow our highest excitement, practical magic happens. We are for anyone who finds themself saying “I don’t know where I’m going, but I can’t stay here any longer.”
We think about work differently than the mainstream. We believe that you can rest to great revenue when you are on your most authentic path. This business has been built by two women doing ONLY work that lights us up (with not one to-do list item that didn’t feel like a joy to complete).
The Career Coven offers 2:1 coaching, courses, and groups for soul-aligned entrepreneurs and career changes. Come join the rest-to-revenue revolution!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Trust yourself. For years I was living from deep societal conditioning that in order to be successful, I had to fit the mold and follow the path that was already laid out for me. But my instincts were always leading me in a very different direction. It just took me a while to put my faith in myself instead of the system. I’m so glad I finally did.
2. Listen to your intuition. Related to number 1, I’ve learned that my intuition is always guiding me towards the best possible results. I now know to place more faith in that than fear. Fear is designed to keep us small, our intuition is designed to guide us towards our true purpose. And yes, it is scary at times. But so very worth it.
3. Follow your excitement and curiosity. My path has been winding and I used to think that was a bad thing. I’ve taken so many courses and made so many career and life choices that didn’t necessarily make sense on paper. But every choice I made (for the most part) has felt exciting and interesting to me. And it turns out, they were all leading me here. I just didn’t know it then.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! We would love to collaborate with anyone who resonates with our message. More specifically, we have a podcast coming soon and would love to interview anyone who is forging a life and career path that breaks the mold of traditional ways of approaching work. We also love to partner with folks who are building creative and/or soulful businesses, dismantling outdated patriarchal and capitalistic ways of approaching life and work, or anyone who is saying to themselves “Not this, but what?”
