We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Sguazzin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Alex, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
This is an interesting question, primarily because its not always. As someone who works full time, finding time to be creative is very important to me. In the same way that i think it’s very important to find some free time to myself, as well as time with friends to keep my social life somewhat active. All of these things contribute to my mental health and well being, which in turn boosts creativity and overall productiveness. And yes of course i have days where I’m feeling lazy, as well as days where i feel like i can take over the world. Balance, moderation and time management is something i try to keep on the forefront of my mind, especially because I’m not always great at that them. As far as staying creatively consistent goes, i try and look at the world in such a way where I’m always thinking about what can be used in art. Whether it be a show, a book, a movie, or a play. Just like how art is a reflection of our world, our creative brains is a reflection of our worldviews. If all above is in my mind on a consistent basis, i am far more likely to have a creative, and by extension, productive day. That’s how i keep my creativity alive; by acknowledging there is creativity in everyone and everything.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As long as i can remember, I’ve always wanted to be an actor. As I’ve gotten older, i found I’ve gained interested in other creative pursuits as well, such as writing and some things on the smaller scale as well, like making you tube videos. In the past year i have done enough creative work to keep me very happy and fulfilled, such as: Sketch comedy shows with my sketch comedy troupe: “This Might Make Sense”, Performed in Northeast Stage’s Playlet and Poetry festival out here on long island. Working as an assistant to the Production Stage Manager on Hampton Theater Company’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened at the Way to the Forum,” and filmed an independent short film titled “Away she Got,” that i acted in and wrote myself. Every version of my ideal life has me consistently working creatively. Weather or not i will have to be working a full time job alongside those creative pursuits or not remains to be seen, but i am consistently making an effort to make creative work my full time job. The most important thing I’ve learned in the last year or so, is that i am not a tough nut to crack, emotionally speaking. Meaning i cry easy. I laugh easy. I think easy. I can think of so many pieces of art, weather they be movies, books, video games, or songs, that make me really FEEL things!! To be able to create something that would make someone else FEEL things the way I do is my most important dream.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The biggest piece of advice id have for young people who want to follow a similar path, is to stay hungry. We live in a world now where as far as acting, and entertaining go, anyone can do it. This is great because if i have an idea for something, all i have to do is write it, film it, and post it online and the fruits of my labor are out there. For everyone, all the time. But this also greatly increases the competition. We actors and creatives are extraordinarily common and we are all unfortunately competing of the same thing, all the while we have the tools to do our own things. And to do any of these things, you of course need to stay hungry, Stay motivated. Stay creative. Somedays its easier than others, but it is always, always worth it. I think of creativity like a car, it requires maintenance.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Support me. Its such an easy and simple answer with a huge meaning. I am forever grateful my parents always` supported me as i continue to chase my dreams. They made this a lot easier so far. `Weather it be helping put me through The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts or just the effective nature of their emotional support, i am so grateful that they do so.
