We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
I think my self-discipline comes from me being afraid of failing myself. I’ve always had in mind what it was that I wanted to do with my life and I know that if I want to be a successful artist, I will have to put the work in. Actions conquer fear, so as long as I’m working on something then I’ll always be one step closer to my goals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
This was a project that I’ve been working on since 2021. Originally it was supposed to be a band, but I struggled to find anyone who wanted to work with me. One day on Craigslist I received a message from a local band called Lovejoy who wanted to audition me into the band. After about six months they ended up letting me go. However, I did end up finding out before then who their music producer was. So, I sent him a cold email and that is how Wake The Sky came to be. What makes this project special to me is how I’ve always dreamed of making music for a living and now I have an opportunity to try. I have three big things I want to do for this project. One being making it into an official business within my state. I am already undergoing the steps for it so by the time this interview is published it should be registered. The next thing is heavy promotion. I plan on reaching 10,000 followers on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Then my final goal is to release a new song in a couple months. I have a song that is a work in progress right now and a cover of a song that I’m keeping secret for now.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the skills that I feel like was the most impactful on my journey was learning how to run a small business. Music is a business and the more you treat it like one the better results you’ll see when trying to grow your brand. It’s all about product, price, place, and promotion. And definitely don’t forget the back-end stuff like taxes. Another skill that I found very beneficial was learning the basics to filmography. If you make a bunch of high-quality short form videos you can use that as a way to promote yourself. And one important quality that I feel like that I have is the ability to take rejection. The music business is very cutthroat and can be very discouraging at times. I go in with the mindset that even if everyone hates my music that it’s totally ok because I love every second of what I do.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think it’s better to do both. When starting out use your strengths and find people to do the things you’re not nearly quite as good at. That way you can put out high quality music while learning to improve the skillsets you still don’t have. Originally when I started putting out music, I had the ability to make great top line melodies, but my arrangements were mediocre at best. Thats where finding a talented music producer comes in. I had a strong foundation in video editing, but I was not nearly as good with working a camera since that was a skillset I didn’t have. So to compensate I found a talented videographer to do my videos so I can focus on improving that skill. Now that I’m much better at it I make high quality short videos. The more you learn the less you have to rely on other people. But on the flip side, collaboration is important because it gives you a second opinion from someone who may be more experienced than you, resulting in better quality music.
