We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Witherow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I lived in New York City for over 7 years and that is a city of sink or swim. The city demands excellence no matter what you do there. When I was there, I had just began my car rental business buying 5 cars and renting them to UBER drivers, which of course, was a massive headache initially. You just have to keep moving forward and trust that it’s all part of the plan. I can say that looking back, I’m thankful for that experience because it not only made me tougher, but a true industry expert in my industry.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am currently the Chief Mobility Officer for Kairos Mobility Ventures – a startup-up in the electric mobility space. We operate and supply electric vehicles to a variety of car-share and ride-share platforms like UBER, Turo, Getaround etc. in effort to electrify the shared mobility industry.
I started in car rentals 8 years ago when I built a small fleet of 5 cars to rent to UBER drivers. At the time, this was my side business as I was pursuing a career as an actor and screenwriter. 3 years ago, I started a YouTube channel about this industry and my business called Car Rental University. It has become very popular and a year ago, I joined Kairos Mobility Ventures as their Chief Mobility Officer, overseeing rental operations and our media teams.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think in general, patience and consistency will take you a long way. When I started on YouTube, I posted videos into the abyss for an entire year before anyone cared about what I had to say. 3 years later, I can make or break a company’s reputation with one video. It was a fairly dramatic turn in influence in that time. Additionally, I think being authentic and honest with your audience really builds trust and goes a long way. Authenticity in general makes you a trustworthy business partner, which will bring you opportunities over time.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I think you have to go all in on your strengths. Being well-rounded makes you forgettable. Being exceptional in one thing gives you an edge in your industry that no one can touch. Few people can talk about my industry in a way that I can on camera. It doesn’t hurt that I have performance training and a vast understanding of this industry. The combination of the two gives me a very unique skillset. You can hire someone else to do the things that don’t come naturally to you.
