Meet Alexander Benjamin

We recently connected with Alexander Benjamin and have shared our conversation below.

Alexander , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Throughout my life, I have faced a plethora of adversity and so much of it was due to me choosing to live my life authentically. This caused upset for many people and through years of bullying and misplaced aggression, I realised that people were threatened because I was challenging myself as to who I could be and what I could achieve.

This led me to realise that we all have so much untapped potential if we just look introspectively and allow whatever we are thriving for to be at the forefront of what we want, instead of letting fear take over.

I understood from quite early on that many out there don’t want you to succeed and that led me to say “respectfully, your opinions about me are none of my business”.

Believing this everyday allows me to tap into my confidence and full creative expression. Art is so subjective and just like people, some of aren’t are not going to be for the general public and that is okay.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Alexander Benjamin, I am an actor and most recently have started to explore my musical creative side.

My artistic career has been ongoing for years since I moved to New York from London around twelve years ago now.

I started diving into acting as a way to contribute and channel my creative expression, however the strikes from last year forced many of us to pivot and through that I found music.

I am always fascinated by people who are able to spread their abilities creatively and I started going the same thing.

I love many elements of music such as: house, dance, EDM, rap, pop & indie so I wanted to see what could come of that. I ended up working with someone in my acting class who is now my frequent collaborator Jesse Turner and we currently have two songs out together and much more coming very soon.

We had our first show in June at Rockwood Music Hall opening for our friend Leila Pari which was such a joy and turned out to be such a success & we then go invited to perform at Soho House (Ludlow St) in August which was brilliant and so much fun.

Out next show will be at the Delancey Hotel on the 1st of February, 2025.

We are so excited to bring some really exciting new music out and work on pushing the boundaries of what can be created.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I firmly believe that listening is crucial, from this you will be able to learn what people are looking for.

An important quality for me, would be to challenge yourself internally to find what makes you confident & how to translate that into every aspect of your day to day life. How are you able to love yourself so much that nothing interferes with that?

As for skills, I believe that learning languages can greatly inform you on the differences in culture & communication from many areas of the world. I am always trying to learn how people communicate because through communication we find love & we find what brings us together as human beings.

I would always advise that people be open to knowing absolutely nothing and realising that we are all trying to go through life together. The more we realise that we have so much to learn and will forever be students the more we can grow and uplift one another.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

There have been too many moments this year that have led to me feeling overwhelmed. This year alone has truly challenged me in ways I’ve never experienced before & honestly I didn’t know what to make of them.

I’ve come to the conclusion that trying to run away from your problems will never serve you. You have to work through them & understand that every feeling you have is valid and this shows that you are a human being.

You need to let yourself feel. It will not make sense most of the time but sometimes we rush to find an answer as opposed to moving through to understand the lesson.

Everything we face that causes hardship & obstacles are an opportunity for growth. The question is “are we going to take it?”
