We were lucky to catch up with Alexander Dibrizzi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexander , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My discipline comes from sports growing up, i played soccer, track, and football. Having to do drills and practice daily with a team to accomplish the end result of beating the other team. I always was doing art everywhere i went, drawing on my class work, using my foot and hands to draw in the dirt. As a kid your inspiration is endless and as we get older, “ life “meaning responsibilities get in the way and change our perspective on the world.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a realist and abstract expressionist portrait painter originally from New Jersey, living in Tampa, Florida. I graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York with a degree in industrial product design, and minor in fine arts. My knowledge in industrial and product design allow for my work to be truly unique and stand out from the crowd.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three areas of knowledge that were most impactful on my journey are; – industrial product design drawing: because of the quantity, quality, creativity, and speed of drawings needed to succeed in class. -figure and still life drawing classes; because of the varied time limits per study, trains you to speed up your drawing level and become more gestural about things to fix after scene is set. – Living and going to school
in Brooklyn NY; being able to go to museums and galleries when ever they are open, all the different cultures, the pace of life, the things you will only see in New York city, all a symphony of inspiration everywhere.
My advice to younger generation is to explore and travel after college, you are still naive about life and what you are truly passionate about. Experiment in the field you choose and are passionate about, the more you do this the more knowledge with what works and what does not.
Finally Love yourself first, trust your gut, and keep a very small circle of friends that are supportive and genuine.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has been with me self: Slowing down and being kind to myself more every day. Setting boundaries with myself and others. Taking care of my health more every day.
