Meet Alexander Kaufmann

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexander Kaufmann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexander below.

Hi Alexander, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

I don’t think anyone ever fully overcomes imposter syndrome. It comes and goes, I personally use it as motivation sometimes. Every time it hits I do kind of feel motivated to improve my skills to I guess prove to myself that I am not terrible at what I do, and those few moments have led me to create some of my best work. However, it is also important to remember that most artists at least once dealt with imposter syndrome even those I look up to so it is nice to know that even if they feel like this yet clearly they have my admiration so that makes me feel a bit better when it hits. Finishing a piece I really like is also a good way of fighting it as I kind of prove to myself that I am well trained and know what I am doing and it leads me to doubt my abilities less as well.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a freelance graphic designer and artist. I mostly do poster work, for films. I have currently done a few films and I have a few in the works right now as well. I also sell my art online in various print styles varying from paper, canvas, acrylic, metal, and more. Most of my art is photo manipulation but I have also done a few illustrated pieces as well. One of the films I recently did art for is now streaming on various services such as Prime Video and Apple TV, which was really fun and interesting to work on. As mentioned before I am working on more projects that I can’t wait to finish up on and see when they release.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One thing is that practice will always beat talent. Some can draw better than others, and some have a better eye for what looks appealing, however, these skills can be learned and improved. Secondly, not every piece of artwork will turn out well. Sometimes to learn you need to try new things and it won’t always turn out well, it will take practice and it is perfectly fine to have bad work, as long as you learn from the mistakes and improve upon them. Lastly, don’t let social media influence you too much, sometimes posts don’t do too well and that is not a reason to doubt your abilities. I have posted work just for it to do terribly but posting it a few months later and it did very well. There are many variables fighting against you when posting online, so don’t let numbers break you down. Just keep doing the art you want to make and keep sharing it there is an audience out there for you.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I would really like to work on more posters for films especially large franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, Tron, etc. as well as more short and indie films. I love collaborating with people and I clearly like working on movie posters and cover art. Another thing I would like to work on are album covers so any artist interested I would love to work together as well. I have an email that is always welcome which is djanoidart@gmail.com so if anyone is interested just send me an email and I will check it out.
