We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexander Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexander below.
Hi Alexander, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
It may sound corny but honestly… I run on LOVE(awwwww lol) but seriously in my lowest point, down and out, it’s always love that gets me to pull myself back up and keep pushing. In our own personal obstacles, there’s always a lesson we can learn from. And I’ve found in every lesson, if we really look, there’s ALWAYS an opportunity to show some kind of love in situations difficult or not so difficult. But you have to soul-tie yourself to love. When we dedicate our lives to moving with love it keeps us honest and open and free.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Well, as an artist I do love variety, but the call to use my voice and share myself through music is something that’s been inside me since I was a young lil fruit! It took a while to get to this point, like any big goal. In elementary, I noticed when I sang, the other kids would hype me up! So it made me feel bold! (my brothers HATED it! lol) I understood, even as a small child, that I wouldn’t be able to chase my real dream of singing/acting. Growing up Jehovah’s Witness (which I don’t recommend) honestly made it impossible to lock-in and be serious about music because of how severely rigid their standards are. But the journey, as tough as it was, taught me that all kinds of LOVE exists everywhere around us. All you have to do is look and listen. I’m so happy and excited to say me and my good friend\bandmate, Benjamin “Benji” McGowan, have been recording our 1st EP! We are Queen Bear, baby! It feels fuckin amazing to have a talented, sweetie pie like Benji to musically vibe with. We’re creating some really catchy, fun, poppy, GAY, non-binary, bad bitch, ass-shakin’ music! When Benji and I got together for this project we both, were going through some difficult\exciting transitions in our lives and I think us meeting was meant to happen! The creative process is so so crucial, every song is made with high vibe intentions, mama! At the end of the day we are just two water signs (Pisces/Cancer) tryna spread some joy and love the best way we know how! Lord knows we need that shit, ESPECIALLY now! And you can never keep a good bitch like me and Benji down so just prepare to love us!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Bravery: Bravery I feel is the work that evolves as you continue down your journey. It takes bravery to make the first move! And there will be other intimidating times throughout the process, that’s gonna cause that bravery to grow stronger! You stick with it bb, you’ll see it WILL become easier to be up for the challenge!
Trust: I used to compare myself to others in my earlier artistic pursuits. Even every now and then do I tend to backslide into that habit. But please lemme save you some time, boo… COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS IS A WASTE OF ENERGY! You’re a person with so many different layers, and so much nuance to who you are. Use that energy to embrace ya heart and soul boo! Be yourself. Trust yourself. Or as my good friend, Brooke put it. You have to “show up” for yourself. And don’t forget to show out while you’re at it too, bitch.
Sign language: In my mid to late 20s I took courses to get a degree in the educational sign language interpreter field. Learning and utilizing sign language opened a new world perspective I think all people should consider. What if you couldn’t hear, or speak? From there I think it opens up a broader question…are we doing enough to connect with others different than us.
I still have very dear deaf friends that I hang out with, and its cool to be able to use what I’ve learned, despite my career shift!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m overwhelmed, the first thing I do is be kind to myself. At the end of the day it’s you with you. If you need to take some time off to re-energize, take it. But the catch is not to cause yourself to feel guilty about it. You are not a machine! You deserve softness and breaks. Eat your favorite food, watch your favorite movie, call your favorite person, take a walk in the sun! That’s what I do!
