We were lucky to catch up with Alexander Watson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Creative blocks happen. For me, I try and make sure the process is as fun as possible. I mean, if it isn’t fun, why do it? For my screenwriting I try and do all the steps because they are meant to help make the script writing process easier. For example, on the writing outlines stages I make it an event. I change my lights different colors, I put on music that matches the tone of the film I’m trying to write, and just have an overall good time. If I’m not getting anywhere, I don’t push myself and do something else. I feel like that’s when we as creatives get sad or depressed that we aren’t doing enough. But sometimes our brains don’t want to be creative and just want to play games, watch movies, or hang with friends. And that’s fine! In fact, I’ve got some of my biggest moments of getting passed a “block” or a plot point I couldn’t figure out because I got out into the world and experienced it.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I like to think I really started my career in film in 2015 when we won Audience Choice and Best Film from LucasFilm and Disney for a Star Wars film we made. But really, I’ve been making movies since I was 10 years old. After moving out to Los Angeles I became a full time Film editor where I worked with TV shows and movies like, American Horror Story, The Predator, and The Exorcist, and Always Sunny in Philadelphia. My first feature, Bundy Manor, was one of the top-most popular horror movies on Tubi during the month of October in 2023. J-WAT Productions is my film production company where we make films ranging from horror to romantic comedies. J-WAT’s goal is to tell stories with strong characters and impactful connections. We also strive to always tell stories with a diverse cast and crew. Currently we are working on a film called, Demonetize which will be hitting the festival circuit in 2026.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First off, I think being fearless is the first step. Now for a small-town kid who thinks “fearless” is a word that is a little intense, I like to think of it more as understand people will say no and that’s okay. Tons of people told me no before one person told me yes. But we only need a few to tell us yes, they believe in our company and yes, they want to help us make movies. Also, more people want you to succeed than I think you give credit. My first film we did on Kickstarter and I was blown away about how people wanted to chip in just because they were excited to see my trying to reach for the stars.
Second, being a hard worker. Now I want to be careful with this. Not just because I want people to understand this doesn’t mean ignoring mental and physical stress that the film industry can cause. But to get investors for films, writing a script, getting actors interested, getting a skillful crew, putting on a full production, seeing it through postproduction, THEN trying to figure out how to sell the thing. It’s a lot. But ENJOY the process. Each step is new. Each step is FUN. It’s a lot. Take breaks, do it with friends, but always make sure to take care of yourself first.
If there are two things I think every actor or filmmaker should know, it would be improv, and film editing. Probably something you didn’t expect me to say haha! But it’s true. These two things have helped me so much in my career. You have to always think on your feet. You can save a lot of time and money if you know basic editing skills. From making reels, shorts, social clips, etc. Improv will also help you sell or pitch your movie. Being in front of an audience and learning those techniques is something I will always cherish.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We get asked this question a lot. Who are we looking for to collaborate with? The number one thing I always say is the quickest way to get into the film industry is investing. If there is anyone who has always been curious about that please reach out to us.
Next we are always on the lookout for diverse screenwriters and crew members in the Los Angeles area. Please feel free to reach out to us. I will say our inboxes are FULL of composers so just be aware.
