Meet Alexandra Tatis-Cummings

We were lucky to catch up with Alexandra Tatis-Cummings recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra , thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?

Honestly, It all started in my mother’s womb. My dad chose to abandon my mother, who was pregnant with me, along with my two older sisters. Picture an immigrant woman, pregnant, with no support or resources, forced into survival mode. She had to put aside her shock, betrayal, and emotional pain to provide for us. I was absorbing her struggle. The transition from housewife to warrior, not only for herself but for her children and unborn child. Imagine the energy that formed within her, and how I felt that energy as I grew within her.

Now, I’m born very healthy, and from what I’ve been told growing up, I’ve always been a kind, honest, compassionate, and sensitive kid to other people’s challenges and pain. As I became more self-aware, I realized my empathy was my superpower. I carry it because I know what it feels like to be abandoned and rejected from the womb. No one deserves that, and I’ve committed to being present with my empathy, not just for my family, friends and my community, but for myself as well.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I educate, empower and equip brave souls with holistic wellness experiences , tools and trainings to thrive during and after life storms. I do this by facilitating one on one Soul Energy (Reiki) Healing Sessions, Wellness Related Retreats, and group Soul Circles. My Soul Circle title , “Soul Cry, Soul Restore” is an authentic space to connect energy, heart and spirit. It is held every last Thursday evening at Make Collectives in Downtown Long Beach. I strongly encourage Souls who are looking for a space to process grief, loss or major life transition to attend.

I’ve dedicated myself in the Mental Health Advocacy, Mindfulness and Healing arts space for 10+ years and what it so special about this space is that besides having the education and trainings to educate and co-create with people, I get to show up as my full self through my lived experience and my God given gifts as a Intuitive healer with spiritual gifts passed down from my Afro-Cuban lineage and culture which really creates ease for others who are stepping into their healing journey b/c they see themselves represented, especially Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Latinas and Black Women.

My life’s work and my identity has evolved abruptly within the past year when my husband Jarrad suddenly passed away in 2024. As you can imagine my life was flipped upside down so leaning on my village and my tools was so helpful and heavy at the same time. But as I allowed myself to take a sabbatical and experience my loss I was able to tap into my ancestral wisdom, begin my healing process and pivot my healing business. My healing business and movement, SoulCare Alchemy is a true act of grace and comes from my authentic offering for the world to heal boldly and love (ourselves and others) on purpose.

I want to invite those who are reading this to connect with me on my website or Instagram @SoulCareAlchemy to partner with me or participate in my offerings as well as to be on the look out for a grief-related wellness retreat for Bereaved spouses and partners (widows) happening in December.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

This is a great question. When I look back on my life’s journey, what has created a great impact, I wholeheartedly lean into the art of solitude, curiosity and becoming a partner with my heavy human experiences and emotions.

I would offer to learn to be comfortable with solitude. Although, we have evidence that humans thrive in community, connection and relationships I think it is equally important to know thyself, trust yourself and be your own alchemist without the constant opinions and validation of others. It’s also a sweet treat to create time for solitude for self-reflection, rest and restoration so that you experience inner abundance to further trust yourself and can serve others from your overflow.

Stay curious! Whether it is in your healing practices, relationships or career, being curious to integrate new things that you’ve never try before or are considered unconventional or taboo. For example Energy healing practices like Reiki or EFT. We are starting to talk more about it but still people see it as a weird thing that actually can save your life and improve your overall wellbeing , especially if you are experiencing grief or health challenges. I love to say that energy healing are subtle and ancient healing modalities that are complementary to what you are already doing personally or from the guidance of your healthcare provider.

Become a partner with your sadness, grief, pain and rage. These emotions are valid and part of our human experience and when not acknowledged and honored it can create serious health issues, disconnection from self and others. Ways that I honor these emotions and ways of being is by going to a rage room to break items that don’t belong to me and I don’t have to worry about going to jail lol. It’s cathartic and necessary for my heart and soul. I also love going to a body of water, specifically the beach. I appreciate how the ocean is just waiting on us to take up space with our raw emotions by way of crying- let out those tears when in deep reflection or getting in the water- swim, float and feeling cleanse by the waves of the ocean or flow of the river. If these are not accesible to you , definitely call a trusted friend or love one who will bear witness and hold space for you to be hinged to express yourself. All this can help you develop a life practice to not only survive but to thrive.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes ! I am calling in partnerships and collaborations with brave souls, mission-driven organizations, creative wellness and spiritual businesses, brands that are passionate about serving the people of the global majority (BIPOC) and their unique experiences, dignity and overall wellbeing. I am creating a transformative grief-related wellness retreat for bereaved spouses + partners (widows) later this year. Support and sponsorship around sentimental and wellness products, a serene space to hold the retreat attendees and marketing support would be ideal.
