We recently connected with Alexandria Rykse and have shared our conversation below.
Alexandria, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I try to use social media productively. By that I mean following accounts that are related to my interests, and ones that encourage growth and support.
I also like to be inspired by locations or fashion, and then create a mood board or vision from there.
I do go through periods where I don’t feel inspired, and editing is overwhelming. I try to take breaks and avoid burnout by declining jobs that I’m not passionate about.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an editorial photographer, I have a degree in photojournalism and fashion merchandising and I love everything about weddings.
I’ve been in retail since graduating and worked at a couple different bridal shops and a fine jewelry store. It’s truly a magical experience helping a bride say yes to a dress, or helping a couple find their diamond to start their journey together.
Photography wise – I’d love to focus more on elopements and bridal portraits. I love small details and want to capture genuine moments. Since working in jewelry I want to do more with fine jewelry photography as well!
I just got back from a trip to Iceland where I was able to do a beautiful styled bridal shoot next to a waterfall. I’m excited to do more on location work!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think important qualities and skills to have are to keep practicing, there’s a lot of trial and error with photography especially involving lighting. Being open to critique is another important skill, you have to be willing to evolve. And the biggest thing is to not get discouraged, social media isn’t always based on skills. Don’t focus on the number of likes something has, if you’re proud of what you did that’s all that matters!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
YES!! I am all about supporting other creatives and putting community over competition. I especially love working with local fashion designers and other small businesses. I’m always interested in test shoots with new models and including hair/makeup artists as well! I’d also love to find local jewelers to connect with!
