We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexandria X a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Alexandria with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is something that has been instilled in me since I was young. Growing up my mother stressed the importance of not only hard work, but thorough work as well. She would say to me “if you’re going to do something, do it right or don’t do it at all”. She shared with me the value in working diligently in everything, whether it was school work or house work, I was to give my best effort in all that I do. As a hardworking woman herself, she led by example, so I really have no excuse.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a production designer and photographer. I have been working in the film and entertainment industry for about 5 years now, and in that time I have worked on several sets from music videos to feature films and everything in between. What I love the most about my work is the aspect of collaboration. Everyone on set brings their unique talents and skillsets that are each crucial to the final product. Over the years I have had the privilege of working with an array of brilliant creatives who have taught me a lot and inspired me to get better at my craft.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey I can recognize that my flexibility, work ethic and networking are what got me to the point where I am today. In life and my line of work especially, you have to learn to roll with the punches and adapt. Things will change at a moments notice and you have to be able to adjust. Try not to get too attached to the way you want things to be, and accept that change is inevitable and often unavoidable. Next, work hard…always. You never know who is watching and being able to get things done efficiently and effectively will is something that will set you apart from the rest. No matter how big or small your role is, take it seriously. Lastly, once you get the opportunity to be in a space where you want to be, network with those around you. For me, my next job almost always came from someone I met on my last job. Make connections, get numbers, and leave a lasting impression on those around you.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Plainly, I think the most impactful thing my parents did for me was support me. They never discouraged me from pursuing the arts and invested in my passions. Even if they didn’t understand it, they simply listened and encouraged me to do my best. My message for parents out there is that when your kids tell you what they want to be, believe them. Help them develop their skills and support their dreams.
