We recently connected with Alexis Burhenn and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’ve always had empathic, intuitive, and spiritual gifts – even as a child. However, they scared me, so I blocked them out. My fear was being labeled as “crazy” or “different”. In my early 20s while working a corporate job, I had a friend who introduced me to energy healing. I remember my first Reiki session like it was yesterday. The amount of peace it made me feel was like nothing I had ever experienced. It was like coming home to myself for the first time. I remember thinking “wow, I wish my job helped people feel like this”.
Despite this thought, I continued in my corporate career as a Recruiter and eventually transitioned into Tech while beginning to self study energy healing and various healing modalities. I worked at Instacart during the pandemic, and while it was an amazing experience (I learned so much, had the best leader I’ve ever worked with, met the love of my life and one of my best friends), I still felt burned out and like something was missing in my life.
I eventually transitioned to Google, and while that was another great experience, I always felt like something was missing – that I could do something more. Again, the fear of the unknown and thought of losing my success kept me in my role until January 2022 when Tech companies were conducting massive layoffs. My role was eliminated, and while I was in shock, I knew it was the beginning of something new.
After deep soul searching, therapy, working with Healers, a past life regression that showed I had been a Healer previously, I took a leap of faith and began formally training in various healing modalities and decided to launch my own business. I have never felt more alignment in a career until now.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I opened Alexis Long Burhenn Spiritual Energy Healing in January and absolutely love what I do. I am an Usui Reiki Master Teacher, Certified Crystal Healer, Certified Chakra Healer, Certified Meditation Teacher, Certified Sound Healer, and have knowledge on many other areas of healing such as EFT tapping, Breathwork, Oracle Card readings, etc. I continue to take more classes and work with respected Healers and Shamans to learn as much as possible.
I facilitate healings in person in Austin, as well as virtual healings across the country. I do not have a formal office space in Austin – I go to my client’s homes for their healings. This helps me get to know them better, they are naturally more comfortable, and it deepens our bond, which makes our healings more effective.
Each and every healing is different – I never want my clients to feel bored or stagnant. My sessions are all intuitive, but Reiki, Meditation, and Crystals are always involved. I primarily work with women of all ages- my clients range from teenagers to clients in hospice. Even after our sessions, I am available for support via text and like to check in to see how they are doing. I also love facilitating healings on animals.
I sell crystals, which is a huge love of mine and has been so much fun to launch. Their beauty and healing properties are one of my biggest inspirations. I bring crystals to my clients at the end of every session, and I also offer 1:1 and group crystal selling sessions.
After working in the corporate world for almost a decade, I am extremely passionate about corporate health and wellness. I am currently working on a corporate meditation offering, as well as a corporate healing offering. These will be launching in August!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Adaptability, strong work ethic, and creativity have been most impactful in my journey.
I began working in restaurants when I was 16 and continued for 7 years, even when I had a corporate job. Working in the restaurant industry and the corporate world made me adaptable, strengthened my intuition and taught me how to communicate, understand, and work better with others from different backgrounds (race, religion, skillset, culture, personality, etc). We are all human and no person is “better” than another. I believe I was meant to have that experience in adaptability in order to be successful as a Healer. I am very grateful for all my work experience.
I learned strong work ethic from my father. He began as a green car salesman, quickly worked his way up to being a top 20 Toyota salesman for many years, then opened his own dealership when I was beginning high school. He has always put his heart and soul into the car business and remains positive, even when he had to close down the dealership in the recession. He now works as a General Manager for a Toyota Dealership and flips cars on the side. Every day he goes into work with a smile on his face, and plans to never retire.
Creativity is where the real magic happens. I personally believe everyone needs a creative outlet in order to feel fulfilled and express yourself. Take classes, read books, experiment with ideas that spark your interest. Find a creative hobby that you are passionate about, and see where it takes you. Enjoy the journey!
My advice for others would be to try your absolute best at whatever it is you do, but don’t burn yourself out. Try many things. If something feels off to you, listen to what your body and intuition is telling you. If something feels off, you can always ask yourself about it, and you will receive an answer.
If you do burn out, get laid off, or something negative happens – don’t beat yourself up. Life happens. When one door closes, another opens. Speak kindly to yourself and others. Take time for yourself every day for self care (even if its just 5 minutes). We can’t show up for others if we can’t show up for ourselves.
Everything always ends up okay in the end, and if it isn’t okay, it isn’t the end.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
It is natural to feel overwhelmed at times. Especially as a new business owner and recovering workaholic, I have found that overwhelm prevention is key.
My prevention plan looks like: scheduling out my calendar in advance, writing out to-do lists every day – focusing on what needs to be prioritized and what can wait a bit, and making sure to include as much self care as possible. I usually keep my phone on do not disturb because the constant messaging, calls, notifications, etc. make me feel stressed while I am working. This boundary helps a lot!
I start every week day making breakfast with my husband; our morning routine relaxes me. I prioritize daily movement, even it’s short. I also take 5-25 minutes to meditate or do breath work, and I love taking walks with my husband at the end of the day, and finishing it up with a lovely Epsom Salt bath. Cleaning also calms my nerves, and I try to read before bed instead of screen time.
For a quick fix, three deep belly breaths (or four rounds of box breathing) will calm you down, then writing out what it is that you need to accomplish. I also recommend getting outside when you are feeling this way, even if its just for 5 minutes. Sunshine and fresh air will naturally reduce your cortisol level.
Lastly, I advise being around people who bring out the best in you and make you feel good. Finding your routine, learning how to prioritize, de-clutter, write to-do lists, implement boundaries, move your body, and understanding that this feeling will pass will all reduce feeling overwhelmed.
