Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Fortier. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Alexis, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I honestly don’t think I’ve fully kicked imposter syndrome to the curb; it still creeps in every now and then and I’m not sure it’ll ever fully go away. It’s not as overwhelming as it used to be, though. I think it’s crucial to talk about because many folks believe it’ll vanish as they grow, but honestly, if you’re constantly stretching yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone, imposter syndrome tends to hang around in the background.
I used to think imposter syndrome was this horrible thing, and of course, it’s not the best feeling in the world, but it shows me where I might need to grow and expand. For example when I first started my OBM business, I struggled with imposter syndrome when dealing with metrics and analytics. I had this gnawing feeling of inadequacy whenever I had to tackle metrics and analytics. It was a huge part of my role but I felt lost and unsure about it. I quickly recognized this discomfort was an opportunity for growth. I took extra time to really understand how to tell a story with numbers and even invested in a course so I could really dive in and learn the ins and outs of the topic. Now, I feel WAY more confident and capable when it comes to the topic!
When imposter syndrome strikes, it’s essential to show yourself some kindness. It’s easy to be hard on yourself, but remember, self-doubt is part of the journey, and it’s okay to cut yourself some slack. And don’t forget to flip the script on imposter syndrome; see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. The more you delve into something, the more those feelings start to fade away!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Alexis, an online business manager (OBM) and systems expert who specializes in helping online coaches, course creators, and service providers streamline their businesses and achieve sustainable growth!
I’ve worked behind the scenes of MANY businesses and through my years of experience partnering with heart-centered CEOs (as well as through lots of trial and error in my own business), I’ve become the go-to gal for all things systems, strategy, and support for those who understand the importance of these things in business, but they’re not sure where to start—or how to manage them once they’re up and running.
What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of entrepreneurs. By taking on the behind-the-scenes tasks and implementing efficient systems, I free up my clients to focus on what they do best – serving their audience and growing their businesses.
Ultimately, my goal is to empower entrepreneurs to build businesses that not only thrive but also bring them joy and fulfillment. Whether you’re ready for all-hands-on-deck support by bringing me onto your team as an OBM, or you just want someone to help you map out what comes next in your business (and how to make it happen efficiently), I’m your gal!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I’d say my knack for all things tech, my obsession with organization, and my resourcefulness have all been my secret weapons.
Firstly, Being tech-savvy is like having a superpower because tech is at the heart of nearly everything we do, especially in the online space. As an OBM my ability to learn new tools and stay up to date is essential – whether it’s mastering a new project management platform or diving into the latest automation software, I’m always up for the challenge and this is something that not only helps me drive my own business forward, but also my clients’ businesses.
Next, organization is my bread and butter. It’s more than just color-coding calendars; it’s about bringing clarity to the chaos behind the scenes. When working with clients it’s about planning, project management, and the ability to take the big picture and break it down in a way that’s actionable and easy to understand. Without organization, systems fall apart, deadlines get missed, and it can be really hard to grow.
Last but not least, resourcefulness. I really pride myself on my ability to figure things out and be resourceful. When faced with challenges or obstacles, I don’t just throw in the towel—I roll up my sleeves and get creative. I love thinking outside the box and being able to find creative solutions to problems. If I don’t know something, I’m pretty confident I can figure it out and that’s truly invaluable!
For those early in their journey, my advice would be to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success. Failure isn’t the end of the road. Instead it’s an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow. Don’t be afraid to take risks, try new things, and step outside your comfort zone. Every setback is a chance to refine your approach, tweak your strategies, and come back stronger than ever before! So embrace the journey, stay resilient, and never stop learning and evolving. Challenges are inevitable but with the right mindset and a willingness to persevere, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I’d say a little bit of both, I believe it’s all about finding the right balance! We should definitely play to our strengths and leverage what we’re naturally good at to excel in our expertise. However, ignoring areas where we may be weaker can end up holding us back in the long run.
Growing up, I was super shy and struggled with anxiety. As I started my entrepreneurial journey I quickly realized that stepping out of my comfort zone was essential for my business to thrive. Sure, I’m super organized, tech-savvy, and driven, but I knew I needed to work on my people skills, like communication, networking, and relationship-building. So I put a huge emphasis on those things when I started.
Entering the business world, I faced countless situations that pushed me out of my introverted bubble. Networking events, client meetings, and sales calls were all challenges that forced me to grow. Instead of avoiding them, I embraced them as opportunities for personal development. While I still struggle in this area from time to time, I’ve learned to navigate these things more confidently.
This also hasn’t just helped my business success; it’s also transformed me personally. Embracing a growth mindset and actively working on my weaker areas has not only enhanced my overall capabilities but it’s opened doors to new opportunities in my personal life too and has helped me be more comfortable overall!
