We recently connected with Alexis Kemp and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Starting a business at the age of 20 wasn’t necessarily seen as the “norm”, as some would refer to. Individuals my age weren’t embarking on the same path that I was, and that was something I learned quickly. Because of this, I was typically the youngest business owner, business minded, business oriented individual in many settings. It was very intimidating. Some people looked at my age and underestimated me at times, didn’t consider my success, etc. But, I did not let this stop me; in fact, it encouraged me. I used my young age to my advantage, to set the tone for those that were coming behind me. I wanted to make the statement that you can absolutely do what you put your mind to, regardless of the age. I had to build up even more self-confidence that would present opportunities in every aspect that I hoped for. You have to believe in yourself before others do, that’s the key.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My Sister’s Scrub is a handcrafted skincare company that specializes in dark spots, acne, eczema, and so much more. I created this brand in 2018 when I discovered my deep passion for self-care as well as skincare. My Sister’s Scrub, MSS, emphasizes three aspects of life such as Self-care, Skincare, and Sisterhood. With this, we handcraft body scrubs, body butter, body oil, lip scrubs, soaps, and more. Each product is named after a sister close to me and is represented by their initials or a sisterly related name on the jar/bottle. The most exciting part about running MSS is seeing the impact that it has on women all around the world. Our products have helped individuals feel confident in their natural skin state, nurture their sisterly friendships, and dedicate more time to self-care. We’ve shipped to over 30 states and 3 countries, making MSS a worldwide brand. Although some days can be tough as an entrepreneur, I would not trade this experience for anything in the world. Handcrafting products is truly my passion.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were impactful during my journey, and still remains relevant now is resilience, courage, and prioritization. As I mentioned earlier, starting a business at a young age wasn’t always easy, but with these three qualities I was able to stay the course while building my foundation. I still adhere to such qualities today to ensure that my foundation remains stable and consistent. My advice to those who are early within their journey would be to find your why and nurture it. Knowing your why and your passion behind your business and goals can lead you into so many positive opportunities. It’s a sense of being confident in you and your brand. With this, you must remain resilient and courageous; for this will allow you to bounce back from any obstacle. Prioritization is also key. Invest in planners that will organize all tasks and responsibilities day by day or week by week.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I often times do feel overwhelmed, but I never look at it as a bad thing. It makes me re-think and reimagine the feeling in a way that infers success in a sense. Often times we feel overwhelmed because of all of the things we have going on and as a one woman business owner, it can be tough. But, this calls for me to take a step back, breathe, note down what needs to be done, and pick things back up. I emphasize self-care within my brand, so it’s important that I live that reality as well. A day off, as unproductive as it sounds, can allow you to regroup before handling all tasks and responsibilities.
