We recently connected with Alexis Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When I think of the word resilience I imagine someone being adaptable, and adjusting to every obstacle thrown at them. Throughout my life I have experienced many obstacles, traumas, losses, and have had to break them down in order to be the successful mother, and nurse practitioner that I am today. My resilience streams from my upbringing; my mother and father were both young parents, who strived to ensure that my needs were met and that I chased my dreams without fear. My resilience also comes from being a strong- minded, and independent woman. I am a mother to an awesome 5 year old little boy, who motivates me daily to be the best mom I can be and to always create new means of learning, and an “easier” life for him. Being resilient motivates me to know that I can do great things and that there is no limit to what I can do.
Another huge factor for me is faith. Without God and his words, and friends and a church family who surround me with love and his teachings I would not be the woman that I am today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a board certified doctoral nurse practitioner, and a mother to a 5 year old little boy. I have dreams of opening my own practice very soon in the Anderson area.
I also love my career as a nurse and am so excited for the endless opportunities and doors this career path has opened up for me. I love being able to advocate for those who feel as if they have no voice, establishing new ways to deliver information, and I love when I walk into a setting and other African American patients are excited that they have a nurse and a provider who “looks like them!”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For anyone that is wanting to become a nurse or a nurse practitioner I would encourage you to not give up when things get hard. Resilience and strength is definitely needed. I would also advise one to be eager to learn, open to experience new things, and for one to never give up on their dreams!!
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful things my parents have done for me has been being there for me, showing and telling me how much I was loved, helping me with my child, and instilling a relationship with Christ in me at a young age. Without my parents, I would not be the woman nor mother that I am today! I thank God daily for both of them and I thank God for always being a vessel that I can call onto and cry to without judgment daily!
