We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexus “kleo” Lessears a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexus “Kleo”, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I believe confidence is something that is built over time. Many factors contribute to it, such as the way your parents raised you, how they spoke life and confidence into you, and even how they embodied confidence themselves for their child to mimic. That was the first source of my confidence as a child. Having a beautician for a mother made it easy to receive constant reminders of how much confidence as a woman comes from embracing all parts of femininity—especially in how you think, speak, treat, and see yourself and anything or one that enters your presence.
Because of that, my mother had a rule—no matter how chaotic the mornings were in a house full of four teenage girls, she kept a mirror by the door and wouldn’t let us walk out until we could look into it and genuinely smile. That’s a rule I still follow to this day because it reminds me of the importance of being present with myself. It allows me to acknowledge the things I admire about myself and the things I want to change—not just from a surface-level perspective, but deeply within my soul.
This daily accountability keeps me grounded in real time, helping me recognize areas where I can evolve for the better. And that transformation always leads to a more confident, feminine, and elevated version of myself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Let me start by saying—I am a woman of many gifts, and I cannot be boxed into just one thing. My purpose in life is to help bring balance, which has led me to empowering women by helping them find confidence in their femininity in a world that often pushes us toward masculinity.
This is where my work as Kleo, The Confidence Coach comes in. I work with girls in elementary, middle, and high school to promote self-awareness, healthy mental and emotional development, and athletic training—typically with girls’ basketball and volleyball teams. I serve as a Confidence Coach through my nonprofit organization, Elegantly Elevated, where I lay the foundation of confidence in young minds during their adolescence. That’s why I’ve taken on the responsibility of being a voice and an example for these young girls.
Additionally, I am a licensed esthetician and permanent makeup artist, known as The Brow Fairy. I started this business to help people transform from the inside out. When a woman’s mindset is elevated, it only makes sense for her outward appearance to reflect that beautiful transformation. Through subtle, natural beauty enhancements like facials, brows, and lashes, women can feel more beautiful without needing a full face of makeup every day.
Last, but certainly not least—beyond all of this, I am an entertainer. I have worked as a print and runway model, poet, speaker, basketball player, dancer, and artist in many forms. I also serve on the production team for the highly respected radio show and podcast Oowwee Hip Hop & R&B.
I earned my Master’s in Business with a concentration in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from Clark Atlanta University School of Business. This education equipped me with the strategies necessary to maximize the endless treasure chest of talents I’ve been blessed with—allowing my gifts, passions, and dreams to come together and build a brand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities on my journey have been developing my confidence, understanding my purpose, and keeping my faith at the center of everything in my life.
Faith
Fun fact—my middle name is actually Faith. I believe the fact that this was the first thing that came to mind shows just how deeply it still rings true in my life. It is only by faith that I have the ability to be guided. Allowing myself to be led by God gives Him leadership over my life, enabling me to live in my true destiny rather than falling into an imposter lifestyle that looks good on the surface but lacks true fulfillment. Society and social media often push us toward illusions of success, but faith keeps me aligned with my real purpose.
Purpose
Being guided by faith makes it easier to understand why God has placed me here at this moment and what purpose He has for me. Walking in faith naturally leads you to live in your purpose—because you are not guided by sight alone, but by divine direction. When you have purpose, you develop a sense of urgency—you have something to accomplish. Purpose gives you a reason to learn, grow, and help others. And ultimately, that is why we are all here—to serve. Without purpose, how can you authentically help those whom God has specifically placed in your path and gifted you to impact?
Confidence
As I mentioned earlier, confidence is built—you don’t just wake up one day and have it. How can you be confident if you don’t know your purpose or the One who created you? Confidence is developed through self-awareness and a deep understanding of why God has placed you here at this exact moment. True confidence is the key to walking into any room with a presence that isn’t just surface-level beauty but a powerful energy that resonates deep within your aura and soul.
You can’t fake real confidence—people can always recognize authenticity versus imitation. True confidence is rooted in faith and purpose, and when those are aligned, the impact you make is undeniable.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The only reason people truly face challenges is that we try to avoid or delay change. We don’t want to leave the comfort of where we are. We look at everything change requires and say, It’s too hard or I’ve never done it that way before.
Being open to change—whether it’s my environment, my friend group, my habits and norms, my belief system, or even the ways I was programmed to think or act before I had the autonomy to make my own decisions—is essential for growth. Even if I once chose to act a certain way for a period of time, I know that the moment I truly decide I want something different for myself, I have the power to change it.
There’s a quote by Angela Davis that I absolutely love and repeat daily:
“I am no longer accepting the things that I cannot change. I am changing the things that I cannot accept.”
Having a close relationship with God helps me navigate the intuitive nudges that tell me when I’m being called to change—not because where I was is necessarily bad, but because my purpose now requires elevation. Understanding this means recognizing that change is good. It signifies growth, a new level. And while it may be painful or difficult, faith reminds me that I never have to go through it alone.
I’ve also learned that every time I’ve had to embrace transformation, everything I needed for that transformation was already waiting for me—I just had to be willing to receive it and step into my calling.
