We recently connected with Alfred Collins and have shared our conversation below.
Alfred, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room that looks like me, knowing that I have a story to tell. It doesn’t start with me, but I’m so blessed to be able to represent those who have pave the way before me. Hard work and never giving up on your dreams is what I’ve learned from my parents, and grand parents. My family is such a part of what I do, they keep me going, and with great friends that keep me encouraged, it’s a good combination to have. I realize by being on the room, I’m in that room for a purpose. It’s only by the Grace of God that I’m able to be in that room.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As I’m launching out into the deep of my business. Connecting with others that are in a different line of business, that keeps me sharp. Allowing the world to see what I do, and what I have a passion about, is truly a blessing. I’m excited about being in this competition called Your Favorite Chef hosted by Chef Carla Hall from the Food Network. It’s a great opportunity to be seen, and notice through out the world. Even when this event is over, I believe God has already open another door for me to walk through.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say having faith in God, being obedient and trusting God at His Word. These are the things that help keep me grounded, and help me to stay positive. My advice to others is to stay the course, and keep pushing towards your dreams. Knowing that there’s a gift in you, and you have a responsibility to serve your gift to the world.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Bible, the Word of God. It so full of wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Learning the character of God, and who God is, allows us to learn who we are in Him. Remembering when Jesus told Peter to come to him out on the water. Peter began to walk on the water, but as he noticed the wind was blowing and the storm was picking up, he began to sink. When he took his eyes of the Lord, and more on the storm just as we do at times in life situations. Knowing that we are all faced with trails, and tribulations, we must stay connected to the Lord. That’s what gives me strength and helps me in my life.
