Meet Ali Kaeini

We were lucky to catch up with Ali Kaeini recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ali, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I found my purpose as an artist by connecting deeply with my Persian heritage and cultural narratives that shaped my understanding of identity as an immigrant in the US and also childhood memories. My art became a way to explore these themes, particularly the impact of memory and history on contemporary Iranians. Over time, I realized that my purpose wasn’t just to create art but to use it to confront and reflect on the complexities of identity and cultural experience, while also sharing this journey through teaching and inspiring others.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a Persian-Kurdish artist based in NYC. My work weaves together themes of displacement, memory, and identity. I draw from Iranian history, architecture, and decorative arts to explore the landscapes shaped by memories and historical events. My art often merges personal recollections, like the trauma of childhood solar eclipse in Tehran!
What excites me most about my work is the interplay between old and new, the blending of architectural and organic forms, and the use of materials like homemade natural dyes, acrylic, spray paint, fabric collages, and embroidery. These elements come together to create intricate installations that invite viewers into a constructed space, allowing them to physically engage with the stories I’m telling.

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled about my upcoming solo exhibition as a Hamiltonian Artist Fellow in DC in 2025. I’m also deeply committed to teaching and I’m exploring new opportunities to connect with younger audiences. Through my art, I hope to create spaces where personal and cultural histories can intertwine, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences in a shared journey of discovery.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, a deep connection to cultural roots, and the ability to navigate between different mediums and techniques. Resilience has allowed me to persist through challenges and stay true to my vision, while my connection to my Persian-Kurdish heritage has provided a rich source of inspiration and meaning in my work. The ability to experiment with different materials and approaches has helped me evolve and push the boundaries of my art.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My mentors and colleagues have been crucial in helping me overcome challenges and develop essential skills. Their insights and feedback have guided me through artistic and professional hurdles, providing both practical advice and emotional support. Their encouragement has been instrumental in refining my practice and navigating the complexities of my career.
