We recently connected with Ali Mohammed and have shared our conversation below.
Ali, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
In addressing how I’ve tackled imposter syndrome, I’ve taken what might be seen as an unorthodox approach, but one that has proven deeply effective for me. I see imposter syndrome not as a hurdle to be circumvented through self-deception or avoidance, but as a potent motivator and a tool for personal and professional growth. I’ve learned to harness the energy of my insecurities by placing myself in environments where I’m surrounded by individuals who are more knowledgeable or experienced, thus pushing me to elevate my own standards and work ethic. This strategy, which I summarize as “outworking your insecurities,” has not only allowed me to prove to myself my true capabilities but has also instilled in me a relentless drive for learning and self-improvement. It’s about transforming the narrative of imposter syndrome from one of self-doubt to one of empowerment and growth.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At Awaiken, I’ve embarked on a mission to demystify AI and make its understanding accessible to the most vulnerable communities, blending technology with humanity to inspire a broad spectrum of students and professionals. As the founder of this AI-education nonprofit, I find immense joy and fulfillment in equipping individuals with the knowledge to navigate the swiftly evolving AI landscape. Through high-school clubs, online platforms like Zoom and Discord, and extensive social media outreach, I’ve reached over 8,300 recurring learners, and through my content, I’ve touched millions more. What sets Awaiken apart is not just the scale of my impact, but the depth of my engagement—whether it’s tutoring students, empowering small businesses and nonprofits worldwide with AI tools, or debunking AI myths with experts from NASA and Stanford. My initiatives, like the hackathon that fosters practical AI solutions among BIPOC communities, underscore my commitment to inclusivity and real-world applicability. The launch of AwaikenGPT, a personalized AI assistant, marks a new chapter in my journey to bring AI within reach of everyone, irrespective of their field or profession. This journey began from a simple yet profound need to bridge the gap in AI literacy, prompted by the curiosity and concern of my peers. In founding Awaiken, I aimed to answer not just their immediate questions but to also challenge the broader narrative around AI, ensuring it’s seen as a tool for empowerment rather than a threat. My story is one of passion, perseverance, and the belief that education can transform fear into opportunity.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Throughout my journey, three key qualities have been instrumental in shaping my path: relentless resourcefulness, continuous innovation, and a profound awareness of mortality, each deeply influenced by my mom’s guidance and example. Her unwavering support and wisdom have taught me to cultivate resourcefulness by embracing challenges as opportunities to learn, mirroring her own approach to life’s hurdles. The awareness of the finite nature of time, inspired by the concept of ‘memento mori,’ motivates me to prioritize my efforts on truly impactful projects. To others at the start of their journey, I recommend embracing challenges as learning opportunities, constantly seeking knowledge in your field, and using the awareness of life’s impermanence to focus on what genuinely matters.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m currently spearheading an AI startup and am in search of individuals who are as passionate about AI and entrepreneurship as I am. Specifically, I’m looking for skilled full-stack developers and machine learning engineers who are eager to tackle challenging problems and innovate at the intersection of technology and education. If you have a strong foundation in these areas and are excited by the prospect of shaping the future of AI in education, I would love to hear from you. Collaboration and fresh perspectives are invaluable to our mission. To connect, please reach out through LinkedIn. Let’s explore how we can make a significant impact together in this exciting field.
