Meet Alicia Shevetone

We were lucky to catch up with Alicia Shevetone recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

This is a deeply personal issue; however, my success thus far stems from the assumption of a level playing field that no matter who’s in the room, we’re all fundamentally the same. Why divide a room based on perceived differences?

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

So much to celebrate!! I am a chef, cookbook author and culinary entertainer in Las Vegas. On May 23, 2024, I had an epiphany that the pursuit of culinary knowledge should not come at a price. That very night, I founded America’s first self-service cookbook lending library, Nice Nice Bite. I immediately went into fundraising mode and was relieved to discover that some of the country’s most celebrated chefs feel the same way. Countless cookbook donations later, we’re on the verge of international expansion and are a 501c3 with a global mission to promote culinary literacy.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Perseverance
2. Resilience
3. Confidence

At the beginning of your journey, and beyond, you will encounter obstacles. You must break through each, learn from the experience and press forward.

If each obstacle weighs on you, and you are incapable of moving on, you may not survive the journey. Envision yourself protected by a teflon aura, incapable of absorbing negativity.

The connective tissue between perseverance and resilience is confidence. Without confidence, your determination to weather each storm will fail to shield you from the next. Demonstrate that despite the naysayers, YOU believe you will succeed.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My mother. I fully admit that I tested limits as a child. When pressed to excel, I relented and delivered; however, my default position was to do the minimum to satisfy authority. I didn’t care about anything in school, except for drama – AKA acting class. I didn’t reject intelligence. In fact, I relished witty banter and continuously searched for ways to leapfrog ahead. I now realize that when my mother pushed me to achieve granular objectives, she was fortifying my resolve to always press forward.
