Meet Alicia Smith

We were lucky to catch up with Alicia Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alicia , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I find my resilience comes from all the strong business women in our family. Starting with my great-great grandmother Altagracia Garcia De Ramirez, a widow with two young children. Abuelita ran a mill and small tortilla factory in Mexico in the early 1900’s. That is something I respect and honor.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been cooking since a was a young girl helping my parents run their boarding home in Oxnard California. I also volunteered at my mothers friend Dolores restaurant at the age of 11 and loved every minute of it. I think now that is where my passion for care giving started. Dolores later became my favorite teacher I ever had.

At Quvo we are often referred to as the Quvo Community. Allison, Matthew, our team and I work very hard to welcome everyone into our Fonda and hope that when they leave they never forget the special experience we attempt to provide.

There’s always a daily food special available similar to the creations made by my mother many years ago. I love to share and educate our Quvo family on these culinary delights every time I get a chance. We also have Matthew with his amazing yet humble educational skills in craft beer. Its great to see how now after over 6 years people’s taste buds for beer and food have grown.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It is very important for me to always do my very best, live with joy, and appreciate everyone who takes the time to visit Quvo.

Love what you do and do it with pride. The success will follow…….

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I am lucky to have a great team. I could not do this without my soul mate, best friend and husband Matthew. He has always been my loudest fan and cheerleader. At Quvo I run the shop and he does all the hard work with logistics and craft beer. Allison has been instrumental with our marketing after obtaining her degree in marketing from The Ohio State University and helps in the dining room when needed. Lastly, my Quvo girls are amazing. The team Carmen, Veronika, Brenda and Ester are hard working, honest & dedicated. I would not have been able to achieve our 6+ years in business without this team!
