We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alie Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alie , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
As the owner of Alie Miller Photography, I found my purpose by following a lifelong passion for storytelling and connection. I’ve always been drawn to the power of images to freeze a moment in time, to capture emotion, and to preserve memories in a way words often can’t. Over time, I realized that photography wasn’t just something I loved—it was a way I could serve others. Whether I’m documenting a wedding, a family milestone, or the beauty of everyday life, my purpose has become clear: to help people see the magic in their own stories and create something lasting they can hold onto.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Photography has always been part of my story. I grew up taking pictures—first with disposable cameras, then with my first DSLR—capturing anything that inspired me, from family gatherings to the colors of everyday life. That early curiosity evolved into a more profound passion as I began traveling. I had the opportunity to go to Canada and Belize through National Geographic Student Expeditions, where I explored both photography and cultural storytelling in a hands-on, immersive way. Later, I traveled to London and Paris, where I continued photographing architecture, people, and landscapes, further developing my style and eye.
Today, I own and operate Alie Miller Photography, based in Winter Park, Florida. I specialize in capturing genuine moments—whether that’s portraits, events, or lifestyle imagery. What excites me most is getting to tell someone’s story through images they’ll cherish for years. My work is about authenticity, warmth, and connection. I want my clients to feel seen, confident, and celebrated in every photo.
In addition to running my photography business, I’m currently pursuing my master’s degree in Hospitality Administration, which has given me a deeper understanding of guest experience, service, and event management—skills that continue to enhance my work behind the camera. I’m also expanding into creative portraiture and travel photography, and I’ve been collaborating with local artists and entrepreneurs to showcase their work visually. I’m currently working on a personal photo essay series that explores historical tourism in Florida, blending my academic background with my creative passions. My goal is to continue growing as both an artist and a small business owner, offering services that reflect my love for storytelling and my dedication to the community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that have had the most impact on my journey are curiosity, adaptability, and relationship-building.
Curiosity is what sparked my interest—I was always drawn to visual storytelling and exploring new perspectives through photography. That same curiosity drove me to travel, ask questions, and continue learning—not just about my camera, but also about people, cultures, and experiences. For those just starting, I encourage you to stay open-minded and explore what genuinely excites you. Let curiosity guide your learning, and don’t be afraid to try new styles, settings, or creative outlets.
Adaptability has been essential, especially as I’ve balanced school, business ownership, and creative growth. I’ve learned that things don’t always go as planned—whether it’s lighting, weather, or even career direction—but being able to pivot and stay flexible is key. My advice here is to let go of perfectionism. Instead, focus on problem-solving and learning from each experience. Every challenge is a step forward.
Lastly, relationship-building has been a cornerstone of my business and education journey. Photography is personal, and so is hospitality. The ability to connect with people, understand their stories, and make them feel comfortable is what makes the work meaningful. For those early in their journey, invest time in building genuine connections—whether with clients, mentors, or peers. Your relationships will support your growth and open doors you didn’t expect.
Ultimately, stay passionate, stay grounded, and know that growth doesn’t happen all at once—it’s a series of small, intentional steps.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has played a significant role in my personal and professional development is The Book of Joy, co-authored by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It’s a powerful reminder that joy isn’t something we stumble upon—it’s something we can cultivate, even in the face of hardship. One of the most impactful takeaways for me was the idea that our greatest source of joy often comes from shifting our focus away from ourselves and toward serving others. That perspective has influenced how I approach my photography business, my studies in hospitality, and my presence in everyday life.
Another valuable lesson from the book is the distinction between happiness and joy. Happiness can be fleeting and circumstantial, but joy is more resilient—it’s rooted in meaning, gratitude, and connection. That mindset has helped me stay grounded, especially when navigating challenges or uncertainty. The book also emphasizes the importance of compassion and humility, qualities I strive to embody in both my creative work and my interactions with clients and the community. Overall, The Book of Joy is a poignant reminder that even in a world filled with struggle, we can choose joy—and in doing so, we make room for peace and purpose.
