Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allie Reid. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Allie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think dealing with imposter syndrome is something you will never completely overcome. It is something you have to work at everyday and some days are tougher than others.
When I first started my massage business, I had only been a licensed massage therapist for a little under two years. I had just turned 24 years old, I had no clientele, I didn’t have much money saved, and I was starting my business in a spare room of my home…the odds of me succeeding were pretty low.
I struggled so much with my personal confidence and self-esteem as a teenager and young adult, but as I started growing and building my business and finding my community of strong women in business, my confidence grew and I was able to show up in ways I didn’t think were possible for me.
Having a strong support is SO important when dealing with imposter syndrome, especially as women. Finding your tribe and leaning on your support when things get tough, knowing you have people to help you when you need it feels so nurturing and really makes a difference.
I feel like when my layers of support aren’t strong or when I try to do it all myself, that’s when my imposter syndrome shows up and doubting starts creeping in.
We weren’t meant to do this alone.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a licensed massage and bodywork therapist and owner of Reid Massage & Wellness, located in Charlotte, NC.
I started Reid Massage & Wellness in my hometown, Scotia, NY in 2018 because I wanted to provide my clients with the best massage therapy experience possible. I wanted to move away from cookie-cutter massage care and really focus on the client first, by customizing their massage care and focusing on the entire person and their needs.
In 2021, my family and I moved to Charlotte, NC, where I relocated Reid Massage & Wellness and decided to expand my practice with more massage therapists.
After dealing with my own personal health issues around my menstrual cycle and extreme pelvic floor pain for 3 years, I discovered Maya Abdominal Massage for my own self care.
In just a few weeks of massaging my own belly, I noticed a huge difference in my menstrual cycle and the pain I was feeling in my pelvic floor was almost non-existent.
As I was noticing these positive changes in myself and learning so much about my own menstrual cycle and how to heal using natural remedies, I started to see more and more clients who had health stories like mine; Their doctors had no idea what was wrong, they were passed from specialist to specialist with no answers, they were told their severe pain was “normal” and they were being dismissed or told to use a medication to suppress their symptoms instead of getting to the root cause.
This is when I knew my calling was to work with women, providing and teaching abdominal massage and educating about menstrual cycles.
In 2024, we started offering more womb/women based services at the office and in the second half of 2025, we hope to start offering womb circles and workshops to educate women about their menstrual cycles and reconnecting to the womb.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the three most important qualities to have as a business owner are customer service, knowing your “why” and work/life balance.
Customer service is #1 at our office! Your customers can go ANYWHERE for the same or similar product or service. You have competition everywhere, but people want a great experience. The experience you provide, how you treat a client before, during and after the service, if you’re respectful of their time, if you communicate well and effectively, listening to what they need, making eye contact, …it all makes such a HUGE difference! People love to feel special and love to be heard and seen! Take time to know your market and know what makes people feel special in your industry.
Knowing your “WHY” when owning a business is a must. If you don’t know your “why” or don’t truly believe in what you are selling, you won’t be able to convince your customer to believe in it either. Finding a “why” that not only benefits your customer, but something that also fulfills you.
Work/life balance is extremely important, especially when owning a business! As a business owner, you tend to put 1000% in to everything you do for your business. It’s your baby. No one will love your baby as much as you do, but, you can’t do it all, and if you try, you’ll most likely burn out and start resenting the business you once loved.
Finding a balance when you first start your business is hard, because we live in a culture that socially rewards people for grinding and hustling. And this isn’t to say starting a business won’t be a grind or a lot of work, because it ABSOLUTELY IS, but knowing when to take a break, close your computer and take care of your self is a must. Knowing too, that you can’t do it all….and do it all well. Not one person who owns a successful business did it all on their own. Delegate the things you hate or that you just aren’t good at to people who are good at those things. Find someone to help you write your emails or blogs, hire a social media manager, find someone to answer your phones or check customers out at the front desk so that you can do what you truly love and still have time to have a life outside of work.
Set aside dedicated time to spend with your family and friends every week, set alarms on your phone to get up and go for a walk and remove yourself from your computer and phone. Don’t let your business swallow you whole.
You own the business, the business doesn’t own you.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I really think it depends on the person, but I know for myself, I would much rather go all in on my strengths at this point in my career and delegate my weaknesses to someone who’s better suited for the job.
I am an awesome massage therapist, but I am definitely lacking in the social media department. I will post 3 times a week for about a month and then I get burnt out and go silent for 2 months, which as you may know, is not optimal for Instagram’s algorithm. After struggling and trying to figure it out for the last few years with no luck and really, no actual interest in learning more about social media, I’ve decided to delegate this part of the business to someone else.
I am to the point in my careen where I would rather spend my time, money and energy on the things I know I am great at and I’m passionate about, like new massage techniques or trainings in women’s health. If it isn’t bringing me joy and feels like it’s draining me, it will start to bleed into my life outside of work, and I work too hard to not enjoy life.
