We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Ivy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Allison, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I struggle a lot with writer’s block, and the only way to really beat it (for me) is to write through it and know that it’s going to be pretty bad. I write down anything at all for the very first draft and then take a break for a few weeks. I’ve found that giving myself permission to suck really helps. It’s less pressure that way.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an acquisitions editor at Altered Reality Magazine, which is a free e-magazine for creatives looking to get their work out there. I also edit for authors through Twin Tales Publishing and my own website. All three allow me to champion authors and help polish their work and make it shine.
I’m also an indie author working to launch my second book. It’s an LGBTQ+ portal horror about two women who get trapped in a book. It’s called Inked in Blood and Memory, and I’m so excited to release it. I’m currently looking for ARC readers (free e-book readers) and hope to have Inked up for preorder in August.
I’m also working on something with a bestselling epic fantasy author, which I hope to announce soon.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three things that impacted me the most on my journey were my realism, dreams, and an insatiable drive to learn more about the publishing industry. If I could give anyone reading this advice, it would be to know that if you want to pursue a career in writing, you have to really work at it and go all in. You can’t dip your toes in and hope you eventually get the hang of things. You have to dive in and immerse yourself in everything writing and publishing entails. This includes listening to constructive criticism and recognizing areas you need to improve on and following through.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’d love to collaborate with other creatives (other authors, editors, book boxes, podcasters, book tours, etc.).
