We recently connected with Allison Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I have several practices that have accumulated over time, including meditation, prayer, morning pages, mindful movement (walks, yoga), and being fully present. Sound healing has also become a part of my self-care toolkit. Depending upon the day, I incorporate various components. What I’ve found most important is listening to your body and mind.
For example, I work full-time in a corporate job that I very much enjoy. I workout each morning, but if I’m especially sore, I choose accordingly. It could be a weight lifting day if I’m feeling strong and energized, or yoga if I’m feeling sore and achy.
When you carve out space and time to silence all the noise, you can hear what your heart truly wants. That’s where meditation or walks in nature come in. Also, morning pages (writing 3 pages as soon as you wake up) is a great way to clear your mind and can also spark innovative thoughts and ideas. All these tools and practices enable me to show up in the best ways possible for myself, my family, my employer and my community.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful skills in my journey are:
1) Humor
2) Curiosity
3) Empathy
Regardless of your industry, role or position, keep an open mind, have the ability to laugh at yourself and help people along the way. Practicing self-care and listening to your own intuition is not encouraged enough.
Bring your best self and you’ll always succeed not matter where your journey brings you!

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I love this question since it gets to the essence of the fact that life is short so it’s important to spend it with the people you love, doing things that you love.
For me, I would work as little as possible and travel as much as possible in an effort to experience different cultures. I would fast-track my bucket list, attempting as many new adventures as I could, like rock climbing, surfing and learning to play the drums. I would spend lots of quality time with my husband, kids, and parents.
As I think about all the things I would do, I look at my life now and I’m pleased to share that I am pretty much doing what I’ve outlined above. While I work full-time, it’s not especially stressful or time intensive, and it’s a job I truly enjoy. Life is good. I try to be mindful and prioritize what’s most important, which for me is family. We never know how much time we have left so it’s important to use your time wisely.
