Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ally. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ally , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I know it’s a cliché, but I’ve always had a talent for storytelling. When I was six, I used to sneak copy paper from the family printer to write and doodle my stories. My interest in filmmaking began when I was nine. My uncle is a musician, and he and my aunt would involve my cousins in creating music videos. My aunt taught me how to record and edit videos on my iPad using iMovie, and I was instantly hooked. Throughout middle school, I turned every class project into a video, often driving my teachers and classmates crazy.
By the time I entered high school, I had joined my school’s video production program and had taken video classes for four years. Even during COVID, I continued working on my school’s morning announcements, filming and editing segments and the announcements themselves. Along the way, I researched filmmaking and discovered the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). Now, halfway through my junior year at SCAD, I have worked on over 40 student films in various roles. I have found my strengths and passion in directing, producing, and assistant directing.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Ally Bernabe, and I am an aspiring filmmaker passionate about storytelling. I’m studying Film & Television at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), with minors in Producing and Dramatic Writing. Growing up in Puerto Rico and later in Orlando, Florida, has greatly influenced my artistic perspective, driving my belief in the importance of authentic narratives.
While at SCAD, I’ve collaborated on over 40 student short films, gaining invaluable experience in various roles. I’ve found my niche in directing, producing, and assistant directing. Recently, I directed my first short film, “Co-Stars,” a satirical comedy about two exes reconnecting at a film audition, where they must portray lovers once again.
Additionally, I have produced five narrative short films and two documentary shorts, each enhancing my understanding of independent filmmaking. Currently, I am developing my Senior Thesis project, which I plan to shoot in the Fall. I hope that this project embodies my commitment to pushing creative boundaries and sharing meaningful stories that resonate with audiences.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my filmmaking journey, I’ve realized that the most essential traits for success are unwavering passion, patience, and adaptability. Passion fuels our creativity, infusing every project with a unique perspective that resonates with audiences. Filmmaking is a lengthy and demanding process, requiring dedication and hard work.
Challenges are inevitable. Not everything will proceed as planned, whether logistics or last-minute changes. Embracing these obstacles often uncovers the most compelling aspects of our stories.
To aspiring filmmakers, lean on your creative collaborators and cultivate resilience. In this competitive industry, self-doubt can arise. I’ve experienced this many times, but the support of my peers has reignited my passion and reminded me of the importance of storytelling. Embrace your journey; the shared experiences—highs and lows—shape you as a filmmaker.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
One project that I’ve been challenging myself with recently is the first feature-length script I’ve been writing. I am finishing up a feature film writing class, and next quarter, I’ll be taking the feature film completion class. In these classes, I’ve been working on a story near and dear to my heart titled “Byways,” a found footage-style film where four estranged friends are reunited to spread their friend’s ashes while making a documentary about their reunion. I’m not the most vigorous writer, but I have such a love for writing. This script has been so fun to write but also tricky as I continue to build on the story and get to know the characters I’m writing.
