We recently connected with Ally Vang and have shared our conversation below.
Ally, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity is deeply personal, and everyone expresses it differently based on who they are. For me, staying creative means showing up as my full, authentic self. I believe that when you’re truly being you, your creativity becomes something no one else can replicate. Other things that may enhance it include avoiding being overly creative and having time to socialize, enjoy nature, and pursue other hobbies. This can give my creative brain a break to start fresh on ideas.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hi everyone, I’m Ally, and I am a graphic designer who loves to express my creativity through problem-solving and helping others achieve their goals. Before deciding to pursue a career in design, I had always loved drawing and loved creating art that made people smile. I believe this is where my love for graphic design stems from. I enjoy using my creative skills to support people, especially when they need a little help expressing something they can’t quite do on their own.
I attended the Digital Design program at the University of Colorado Denver. Before that, I faced a choice: continue teaching myself or pursue a formal degree. As someone who thrives in creative environments, I knew that learning alongside others and receiving mentorship and feedback would be essential to my growth. That’s why I chose to go back to school, which was to deepen my knowledge, strengthen my skills, and become the designer I aspired to be. While learning to become a better designer, I was fortunate to gain hands-on experience working with Campus Activities as a poster designer and with the Student Wellness Center as a content creation specialist. These roles allowed me to apply what I was learning in real time, take on a variety of creative challenges, and refine my skills through meaningful projects. That experience helped shape the designer I am today.
Recently, I have received the opportunity to be an intern at IMAX Headquarters located at the Playa Vista office in Los Angeles, California, during the summer of 2025. Everything I’ve done so far has brought me to this point, which is gaining experience in the entertainment and film industry. I’m incredibly excited for what lies ahead in my creative journey. So far, I’ve had the chance to meet and learn from some of the most talented and experienced creatives, and I can’t wait to continue growing in this field.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were consistency, resilience, and dedication. My advice for anyone early in their creative journey is to be honest with yourself and make sure you truly love what you do. Not everything in life is permanent, but if there’s something you’re passionate about, pursue it wholeheartedly. Stay consistent by working toward your goals every day, even in small ways. Be resilient! Setbacks will happen, but learning to navigate through them will help you grow. And most importantly, stay dedicated. That commitment will keep your drive alive, even when things get tough.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
This is an interesting question for me to answer because, truthfully, my relationship with my parents hasn’t always been the healthiest. I’m choosing to speak on it because I’ve come to realize that, while the impact they had on me wasn’t always positive, it played a big role in shaping who I am today. One of the most impactful things they did was, unfortunately, being emotionally neglectful. That experience forced me to become independent early on, to rely on myself and stay focused on my goals. Because of that, I’ve grown into someone who values self-growth, works hard to be the best version of themselves, and doesn’t take their strength for granted. Even though our relationship is still dysfunctional, I genuinely appreciate the personal growth that came from it.
