We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Allyssa Powers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Allyssa, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
As a busy mom of two young children and a business owner, I’ve learned to prioritize self-care carefully. Every activity in my limited free time needs to truly replenish me. My background as a therapist has helped me understand what makes self-care effective, and I’ve built a routine around activities that genuinely fill my cup: reading, hiking with my husband, lifting weights, and maintaining consistent morning and evening routines. When I start my day right, my entire outlook shifts.
My mornings begin early with the cutest alarm clock, my baby boy. After feeding him, I head to the kitchen to make Earl Grey tea and listen to a guided meditation while feeding the dogs and letting the baby play nearby. Then we go down to our home gym, where I lift weights while he contentedly watches and plays on a yoga mat. This workout is my favorite part of the routine because it feels empowering to prioritize myself before caring for everyone else. I track my progress using an app called Stronger By The Day, which helps me log all my lifts.
This routine has significantly improved my effectiveness by promoting mental clarity, cutting through brain fog, and setting a positive tone for the day. I focus on earning “slow dopamine” through activities like working out, reading, and journaling gratitude rather than seeking quick hits. Being a present mom and business owner is essential to me, so I’ve learned that taking care of myself first allows me to show up fully for my kids throughout the day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a therapist, business coach, and educator. My main focus is my continuing education company, Allyssa Powers LLC, where I create business-focused continuing education courses specifically for therapists. My goal is to fill the gaps in our training around business ownership and private practice management. The heart behind my work is simple: “You were trained as a therapist, not a business owner—our continuing education changes that.”
I also run my own private practice and create content for my YouTube channel, where I teach therapists “the things grad school didn’t.” Everything I do connects back to the mission of helping therapists thrive professionally while ensuring they can earn a sustainable living doing work that is both vital and chronically underpaid.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impactful thing on my journey has been reading happiness research and applying its principles. Our brains mislead us about what will actually make us happy, so I’ve turned to evidence-based resources like research studies, books, and Dr. Laurie Santos’s course “The Science of Wellbeing” on Coursera. These have helped me focus on practices like gratitude and mindfulness while combating common pitfalls like hedonic adaptation and comparison traps.
I recommend three things to anyone seeking greater well-being: explore positive psychology, study happiness research, and identify your strengths so you can act from them intentionally.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal clients are aspiring therapists, current therapists, and those looking to open a private practice. I offer continuing education courses for both aspiring and established private practice owners, covering topics like business basics, marketing and SEO. I also provide one-on-one business coaching to help therapists gain clarity on their next steps and grow their practices.
