Meet Alonso Garcia

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alonso Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Alonso, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

I think everything has to do with tennis. I have been playing tennis my whole life at the national level and then D1 at college and the sport made me understand that you cannot simply win matches if you do not take risks. You have to take the risk of hitting a big forehand down the line or go to the volley when you do not feel secure, etc. These things definitely helped me and I am always trying to translate the mentality I had as a tennis player to real life.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I was born and raised in Lima, Peru. I started playing tennis when I was 5 years of age and did not stop since then, I am 24 now. When I was 18 I decided to go to D1 College to play tennis for their team and I was accepted at The Mount St. Mary’s University.

After 4 dreamy years at college living the experience of being an student athlete I then realized how much oportunity the US has in terms of making business while providing value to other people with ideas that you might have, and that is what I did.

I was moving to my first apartment and I realized how hard the moving in process is, like getting a bed, getting a sofa, etc. And also realize how long it takes to get the furniture from the moment you place your order online and also how expensive in terms of money it can get.

I thought to myself that millions of people have to go through this whole process when they are trying to move into their first home or apartment. That is when my mind started thinking in many ways I could make this process easier, faster, and less expensive for other people.

After many months of business planning, meetings, etc. I came up with the idea to fund Garelli Furniture with a mission. Provide real high-quality furniture for basically Ikea prices and same-day delivery, making our customers not to move a finger in this entire process. Garelli Furniture started selling endlessly modular sofas and now we sell from sofas to coffee tables, beds, etc. While providing the same service and experience we had as a mission since we started, provide excellent furniture at very low prices with same-day delivery.

And that is what I have been focusing the last almost 1.5 years now.
I am a big fan of capitalism and this country is what is all about, provide a better product for a better price with a better service than the competitors, and that is what we focus on all day long.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three “skills” that definitely helped me and Garelli Furniture passionate on the market were:

1. Taking the risk
2. Believe in yourself
3. Study hard (read books, conferences, reading similar success stories, talking to people that have been there, etc)

If I had to give advice for someone that wants to start a similar journey would be to to invest in yourself. I know it sounds boring and it sounded boring for me too but there is nothing better than to invest in yourself, the more info or skills you have, the easier will be to you to come up with ideas and execute them.

Nothing comes for free and do not give anything for granted.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Definitely my parents. I could not have had better parents honestly, they made everything much easier for me to approach and they taught me values I would not have if it was not for them.
