We were lucky to catch up with Alphonso Harvey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alphonso, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got get my work ethic from my parents. My father always taught me to “get my mule out of the ditch”-work until the job is done. The best example of this was when we had to fit a pipe for the kerosene stove that heated our home. We didn’t have the proper tools to complete that job but we clanked and banged on that pipe until it fit…and that exercise lasted until 4 am on a school night. My mother dropped out of school at 14 to have my oldest brother….At 40 she received her ged….by 50 she had her masters and was a college professor. My parents are my heroes and showed me what a strong work ethic should be.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I played college football at Vanderbilt University and played with or against 21 first round picks. I am member of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity , initiated as an undergrad at Vanderbilt University. I also received my MBA from Regis University. I created Help To Moms after seeing how well my then pregnant wife benefitted from the products I previously offered to people recovering from surgery. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Strong belief in myself and my plan. The ability to take a “No” to get to “Yes’s”
A listening ear: meeting my customers where they wanted to be met.
Take time developing your idea and go to market plan. If you take time on the front end you will never lose site of what the objective is even when you have to make adjustments.
Be okay with the No’s ; get enough practice to become somewhat bulletproof. Also sell to strangers not just expect your family and friends to support you.
Take some formal sales training classes or work somewhere and learn how to sell first.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
