We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alto a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alto, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Well one day I was in a family member’s pawn shop and a young man walked in and stated that he was looking for a firearm because he was going to be hired by a private security company as armed security. At that point he started to look at the firearms, choosing one he would like to carry.
I knew that if he were to become armed security, he would have to qualify with a particular firearm according to his agency, would be used as a duty firearm. So it raised some red flags in my mind and I started a conversation with him. Later in the conversation it came out that he was purchasing a firearm because he was having some trouble with some guys in his neighborhood that were harassing himself in his family and he was scared for their safety. At that point I advised him he was going about this the wrong way and he needs to be true to himself first with the purpose of purchasing his firearm and when he does buy one, he needs to get some training.
It was at that point I believed a few paths I’ve taken in life were building for this purpose. For most of my life I’ve been around firearms and I do have a particular knowledge, and interest in them. So, I figured I could assist the community with firearm training. Being a so-called Black man, having firearms and training with them, has always been looked at as taboo. Someone that looked like me with a gun, would more than likely be vilified. Growing up I’ve always kept it as quiet as I could. But that day, I also recognized there was a need for persons who looked like me, as well as any persons in the community, to have a firearms company they can feel comfortable with, where they can voice their opinions, and train without judgment.
In all of my classes I ask my clients, why are you here? Why do you think you need a firearm? And what purpose do you think it will serve you? Don’t just take a class to be legal in your State, but take a class at minimum, to get an understanding and learn some of the pros, and cons. There are so many great firearm Instructors out there. If you own a firearm, find one near you and get a little training.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were impactful for me,
1. My drive. When I have a goal, I can go hard at it. Especially when I can see the end result. I have a passion for helping people. I believe this a gift from the Father.
2. My flexibility. Being able to move and circumvent when necessary. When one door would not open, go open the next. Keep going until I’m able to get where I need to be. When I operate, I try to keep a good team around me, Or I will go at it by myself.
3. Being able to keep an open mind and listen. Not afraid to learn new ideas. Build strong relationships. Know when to say when on a project. My advice to anyone early in their journey is to know yourself, know your limits and capabilities. Use it and be honest to yourself. Not what you think or what you want, but what happened, and again be honest to yourself. Then examine your past and what have you learned from it, again, be honest to yourself. Because without being honest to yourself. It ain’t gonna work.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
The ideal client is the person who can see the value in learning firearm safety whether they own a firearm or not. More importantly has the willingness to learn. They are able to put their ego to the side and say “hey, I need this and I want to learn it”. This type of person is not afraid to invest a knowledge for themselves. We do not teach this to be show offs, or if we are the end all do all, or for fame or anything like that and each client is an individual grain. We are a humble crew and we do not pass judgement on any client’s skill level. We like to teach and we like to shoot guns and have fun doing it.
