Meet Alvin Lee Sealy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alvin Lee Sealy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alvin Lee, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Mental health is a major topic and area of my life that I’ve actually been studying for some years because of my own personal circumstances and experiences, and so, I believe that I’ve been able to persist because I made a decision to want to relieve myself of the problems it causes, the discomfort that other people are subjected to, and the overall repetition of negative experiences that comes with it. My studies and practices brought me to the understanding that I’m not stuck, and I can do the work that’s required despite a period of deep emotional pain; I have it in me to go through a dark tunnel of “rocks and sharp objects” if I know there’s light at the end, and resolve.

One of the most important aspects of getting to the root was understanding that I’m responsible for my emotions, reactions and how I choose to interpret things, so giving over my emotional state to other people, situations and circumstances is a choice that I refuse to play a long term victim of; there are things that happen, that we have no control over, but we have the ability to have control over how we let it affects us, as long as we commit to doing the work on ourselves.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am currently the owner and operator of a courier service I provide, particularly in the Washington, DC area. I specialize in delivering plants along with a couple other services.

I actually created this business unintentionally. It started as a means of survival back in 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic. Delivering plants oddly brought me fulfillment and purpose, especially given the shutdowns that were taking place, and so I began to acquire new clients whilst putting systems in place and utilizing apps/software to optimize and streamline the processes.

I am currently putting together an add-on eCommerce component that specifically focuses on plants and art that I’m planning to release shortly called PlntL1fe, it’s a niche concept but given certain trends and movements in certain markets, I believe that it can be very lucrative; stay tuned.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

In hindsight, three important areas I can say that were some of the most impactful were:

1. Knowledge of self; understanding what makes you tick should become an essential element of growth. We are ever changing along with society’s norms, so navigating your internal environment and states are critical if one decides to go into business; the external reflects what’s going on internally.

2. Understanding your why; why are you wanting to pursue whatever it is you’re chasing, and money should never be the only reason, in fact, money is a result of how serious you are about your why.

3. Mastering or getting very good at your craft. Whatever it is that you’re pursuing must be studied, practiced, and continually refined. The product or service may appear attractive, but I believe a client/customer buys into the person, the knowledge, and the experience of whatever’s being presented, so know it like the back of your hand.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

As controversial as this book may be, especially for certain religious groups, Conversions With God, parts 1-4 were the most valuable books I could ever immerse myself into. They unintentionally became my “bible” for a couple years due to how much I resonated with most of the topics at that time of my life.

A few of the the most impactful nuggets of wisdom were, that how I chose to view the world will have major influence on how my personal world plays out; my behaviors and practices are reflections of my beliefs, and my beliefs were influenced and shaped during my upbringing, with some exceptions like life altering traumatic events, but ultimately we should be unlearning and reprogramming the brain and mind. As individuals, we are the ultimate decision maker for our lives, so it would be in our best interest to accept responsibility for the results instead of blaming other folks who may or may not even be involved; take accountability, give grace and seek improvement in self.
