We were lucky to catch up with Alyssa M Owens Tattoo Artist recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa M Owens, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
It’s been a really wild year, I have faced a ton of challenges ranging from personal struggles, health and mental health struggles. I’ve relocated to a brand new market for my tattoo business. I’ve gone from building my business from the ground up in West Georgia, to Athens where I’m now rebuilding myself. It’s been a real challenge but I’m building myself back up and ready for what’s next. I’m lucky to be where I am!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
So my name is Alyssa M Owens and I’m the owner of AMOwens Ink. I’m a professional tattoo artist and I specialize in custom designs, coverup tattoos, reworks, scar coverage, black and grey realism as well as color.
I love doing work that really gets clients excited- taking something personal to them and making their vision a reality.
I pay special attention to making sure my clients feel safe and comfortable. I love working with clients who are looking for a clean, relaxing, safe space they feel heard.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Tattooing is a tough industry to make it in, and you really have to love the art form. It’s requires so much passion for improvement, as well as patience and persistence to get off the ground.
I make an extra effort to connect with my clients in a personal way- a lot of people feel intimidated by tattoo shops and I try to give the feel of going to the spa or somewhere else you go to get spoiled.
I love when my clients tell me it was easier and less scary than they anticipated! That’s the last important step; comfort and approachability.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Currently I’m taking on a new city- Athens Georgia- where I’m working hard to provide custom, creative, clean tattoos. It’s a hard industry to pick up and move, but I’ve had wonderful support from clients. Many of my clients are even willing to drive hours each way to get a tattoo! My goal is to make these trips worth it for them, to get the best experience for their time and money. I also look forward to connecting with new clients. I’m opening my books now, and I’m so excited to see what awesome things we can create!
