Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alyssa Morton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alyssa, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
As a home baker, I love creating delicious treats for myself and others. However, sometimes baking can become stressful and exhausting, especially when I have to deal with deadlines, orders, or expectations. To overcome or avoid burnout, I try to do the following things:
– I remind myself of why I started baking in the first place. I think about the joy and satisfaction that baking brings me, and how it allows me to express my creativity and passion. I also appreciate the positive feedback and support that I receive from my clients, friends, and family.
– I take breaks and do other activities that relax me. I don’t force myself to bake when I’m not in the mood or when I’m feeling overwhelmed. I listen to my body and mind, and give myself some time to rest and recharge. I also enjoy doing other activities, such as playing games with my two children or cozying up in bed to read a good book, that help me balance my life and reduce stress.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and operator of Sweets by Freckles located in Oak Ridge North, TX. I operate under the Texas Food Cottage Law, which allows me to work from home while I homeschool my two young children. My cottage bakery specializes in buttercream cakes, cupcakes, decorated sugar cookies, cookie cakes, cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries, and much more!! I have recently added bundt cakes to my repertoire and I must admit that they are pretty delicious! I offer many different cake flavor combinations. Which is one thing that my clients love about me and I think it’s definitely something that sets me apart. I love collaborating with my clients on their custom orders so that we can make their celebration or event extra special.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As a home baker, I have learned a lot from my journey of making delicious and beautiful baked goods. Looking back, I think the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were:
1. Persistence. Baking is not always easy or smooth. There are many challenges and failures along the way, such as burnt cakes, collapsed soufflés, or less than satisfied clients. However, I never gave up on my passion and kept trying to improve my skills and recipes. I learned from my mistakes and experimented with new techniques and ingredients.
2. Creativity. Baking is not only a science, but also an art. I love to express my personality and style through my baked goods. I enjoy designing and decorating my cakes, cookies, etc. with different techniques, textures, and themes. I also like to explore new flavors and combinations, such as adding spices, nuts, or fruits to my doughs and fillings.
3. Business sense. Baking is not only a hobby, but also a source of income for me and my family. I have to manage my time, budget, and resources efficiently and effectively. I have to market my products and services to attract and retain customers. I have to deal with orders, invoices, and deliveries. I have to comply with health and safety regulations and standards. I have to balance my passion and profit.
As a home baker, I have some advice for folks who are early in their journey and want to develop or improve on their persistence, creativity, and business sense. Here are some tips that I found helpful:
To develop or improve your persistence, you need to have a clear goal and a positive mindset. You need to know what you want to achieve and why you want to achieve it. You need to believe in yourself and your abilities. You also need to be willing to learn from feedback and criticism, and to overcome challenges and obstacles. You need to practice regularly and consistently, and to celebrate your progress and achievements.
To develop or improve your creativity, you need to expose yourself to different sources of inspiration and ideas. You need to read books, magazines, blogs, and social media posts about baking and related topics. You need to watch videos, shows, and tutorials that showcase different styles and techniques of baking. You need to visit bakeries, cafes, and markets that offer different kinds of baked goods. You also need to experiment with different ingredients, flavors, and combinations, and to express your own personality and style through your baking.
To develop or improve your business sense, you need to do some research and planning. You need to know your target market and your competitors. You need to know your costs and your profits. You need to know your strengths and your weaknesses. You also need to market your products and services effectively and efficiently. You need to use social media, flyers, and word-of-mouth, etc. to promote your baking. You also need to provide excellent customer service and satisfaction, to build a loyal and repeat client base.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
As a home baker, I face various challenges in my daily work. However, one of the most pressing issues that I am currently facing is inflation.
Inflation affects me as a home baker in several ways. First, it increases the cost of my raw materials, such as flour, sugar, eggs, butter, etc. Second, it reduces the demand for my products, as customers may find them too expensive or may switch to cheaper alternatives.
