Meet Alyssa Webb-McCune

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alyssa Webb-McCune a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alyssa, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I grew up in an environment where hard work was expected and modeled throughout my family. You were expected to give your all towards a specific cause or belief system. From the time I was a child, I wanted to make a difference and have maintained the child-like belief that I could. This belief, which some would call “naivety,” has grown into a mature confidence in knowing that genuine change can happen, even when the process feels overwhelming.

Additionally, almost my entire family and extended family were in the healthcare field or were emergency responders. I ended up marrying a first responder as well! These examples of diligence to give back to humanity, even in during some of the worst situations someone could ever face, made a significant impression on me as a child and throughout my life that hard work and dedication truly can make a difference in the lives of people around us, and the world.

My work ethic is also fed by the mindset that I want to prove to everyone that I can do, especially to those who doubted me. Many times in my life I had been told I wasn’t going to be able to accomplish a good life due to making different decisions than the rest of the population. I love being able to look back and see how the path less traveled has proven to be rewarding and fulfilling in ways I could have never expected.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own a private mental health counseling practice in North Houston where we specialize in working with high-performing individuals to achieve success by working through mental roadblocks and proactively getting ahead of future difficulties. By creating a place that is focused on just adults, we are able to cater our entire brand and focus to those who have everything expected of them, without much genuine support. Our counselors base their approaches in research and contemporary interventions to provide the best services for our clientele.

I am passionate about creating this space because I genuinely believe that when people are able to live healthy lives, they then make positive impacts and changes in the world around them, leading to a greater ripple effect of change overall. So many people have a certain concept about therapy thinking it is “old” and “outdated” and move towards other modalities of support that can be largely unregulated. I make sure to emphasize continuing education for all of my counselors to ensure we are always providing action-oriented, research-based therapy interventions to change the way people experience and see psychotherapy.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that my creativity, adaptability, and openness truly helped me grow the business to where it is today. Creativity and risk-taking are necessary components to growing a new business, especially one that is going to stand out. It is uncomfortable and scary to start something completely new, but trusting in yourself and your concept is a huge part of starting! With that being said, there also needs to be openness to critique and have the adaptability to change. I encourage all new business owners to learn from everyone they can and see what nuggets of truth they can pull from each person into how they can improve their business. Never get so arrogant that you can’t learn from the people around you.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Networking with others has been an integral part of my personal growth and professional development. Human beings are meant to thrive in groups and business is no exception! I am active in many of my local business groups as well as general social groups and I have loved the relationships I have built that have then given me the knowledge and confidence to continue to grow and succeed.
