Hi Amanda , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience a beautiful word that can mean strength, adaptability, strength of character and so much more. My personal resilience, I believe comes from my father. I am 100% my father in so many ways to include business and interacting with people. He was always optimistic, generous, confident and always resilient no matter what was going on in his life and or business deals. He did not let anyone or any situation bring him down. To be resilient is to find the strength from within and rise above all else. My father has been gone now for over 30 years but I still feel the ignite within me from him to keep going and continue to fight the good fight. That is resilience.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
With sustainable fashion on the rise, designs by Amanda Alarcon-Hunter and our husband and wife company, Minx and Onyx Vintage are quickly in the know! As an artist and sustainable fashion designer, my love for slow fashion is not like any regular job to me. I am proud to promote and continue to bring sustainable vintage fashion, object art, specialty wardrobe, jewelry and accessories designs to life. Having knowledge and a grand understanding of 25+ years in the sustainable industry, sustainable wardrobe styling comes as a breeze. To empower others daily to feel good about themselves is what I do best. I believe the person makes the clothes, the clothes do not make the person. I brand our business to promote ethically made products, redesign clothing and accessories and empower individuals to recognize that sustainable fashion is a more conscious way to wear fashion.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back at my journey, I realized better communication, listening more to people and making good business judgments were most impactful to me and my businesses. As I learned to better navigate through my business dealings and understanding of people, I realized these three skills are the upmost important for any business in order to maintain long term connections, relationships and better business’. Mastering these skills also helps reduce stressful situations. Communication, expectations and ideas need to be clear and straight forward from the beginning. In business situations it all needs to be black or white there are no gray areas. This is where miscommunication and lack of transparency can stem from. Being honest with yourself and always speaking the truth no matter what is what creates a great leader and business person.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would have to say I have had and continue to have many positive mentors throughout my life. Not one person knows everything. So let go of that ego, be open minded and find those people in the world who are smart, more wise, strong willed, kind, confident and yet compassionate. These incredible strong yet kind people are there to help you if you let them. Once you find these people, and unfortunately they are hard to find, hang on to them! they are far and few between.
