Meet Amanda B

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amanda B. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Amanda, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I always felt like I was the “girl next door” growing up and people would tell me how cute I was or how adorable I was and it made me feel like they were talking about a puppy! I’ve always known I was beautiful but I wanted something that made me FEEL that way too. After a really bad breakup, I decided to start my pole journey. My first time going to the strip club, I was a freshman in college, and I was amazed with the dancers and the tricks they were doing. I said to myself that I would love to learn how to do that one day. I went to a few events over the years and finally signed up for my first class in 2018. I went because I wanted to “find my sexy” and feel confident in my skin without having to seek validation for it. And here I am 6 years later, a business owner and pole dance instructor and it’s the best feeling ever.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Hi! I’m Amanda. I’m a Social Worker by day, Pole Dance Instructor by night. I have been in the field of social work for 11 years and have worked with many different populations, such as mental health, domestic violence, and disaster services.

I started my pole journey 6 years ago, have been an instructor for 3 years and a business owner for 2 years. I started pole as a confidence booster and to overall feel sexy in my own skin. In the process of finding my sexy, I helped others find theirs too.

I’ve always known that I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. After losing my job at the height of the pandemic, it gave me a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life. After a lot of late nights, tears, and frustrating moments, Pole Therapy was born! I wanted to create a safe space for people to be able to express themselves freely through movement and dance. There were many times where I would have students come to my classes frustrated with life and needing to vent. I allowed them to get whatever it was off of their chest and then we danced and left our problems on the pole.

Pole dancing has been my therapy and has helped me get through some really tough times. I’m a huge advocate for mental health and I wanted to create a therapeutic, non-judgmental experience for others. On top of that, I encourage body positivity, especially for the plus size community, so I want others to find their sexy like I found mine.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Perseverance, empathy, and compassion. There were many times when I wanted to completely give up and felt like I was making a mistake with starting my own business. There are tons of pole studios out there but I wanted to make sure mine was different. Combining the two things I love doing, social work and pole dancing, is what set my studio apart from others, which is what made me work harder. My advice is to never give up. It has been a long, rocky road but in order to have a testimony, you have to have a test.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

Anybody wanting to add a little spice to their life and feel good about themselves. Often times we are our own worst critics, but once we learn how to love ourselves as we are, it makes things a little bit easier.
