Meet Amanda Gainey

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amanda Gainey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amanda below.

Amanda, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

This is a great question because I’ve come a long way in overcoming it, but also still experience it sometimes! I’m not sure that someone could say that they never feel it. We all have insecurities at one time or another, some are just better at covering it up. What I can say is, I have grown a lot as a person in the last couple of years. I’ve learned that life is too short to be worried about what someone else thinks of me (or my work) or to play the comparison game. We’re all uniquely made and all have our own creative mind! Something I’ve found super helpful in fighting against imposter syndrome is, keeping track of compliments or reviews. I have an album on my phone with texts, DMs, reviews, etc that are uplifting. It’s always a reminder that people enjoy my work!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a calligrapher and engraving artist in Nashville, Tennessee. While I do still work on weddings occasionally, much more of my time is spent on live events and brand activations! You may wonder what a live events artist does. I go on-site and interact with guests or customers while also personalizing an item for them to take home. I have worked in a variety of events, from small private gatherings, in-store brand activations, holiday parties and all the way up to big corporate events! I love the quick pace of these events while also getting to chat with so many people! My favorite part is when they receive their item and joy is spread across their face!
I also offer commissions or corporate gifting. If someone needs multiple engraved or personalized gifts for their group, I can do this as well! I’m able to work with a variety of mediums including ink, engraving, hot foiling, wood burning and more!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think persistence and determination played big parts in the growth of my business! I also have a great support system who cheers me along the way!
For someone just starting out, I think it’s important to decide what your purpose is going to be; do you want to do something as a hobby, or a side gig, or are you looking to transfer to full time? From there you have to set goals and re-visit them along the way! I have heard so many times how important it is to write down your goals! Tell people about them and keep yourself accountable. Running a business is not easy, so you have to have your mind set that this is what you are going to do! I am actually still working my full-time job, so I have to balance and be on track. We’ll see what the future holds in that, but until then, you have to stay focused and organized.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes! I am open to networking and collaboration! I just told someone I am in my “expanding my networking” stage of my business! I have done weddings for the last few years, but in 2024, I decided to transition to mostly being a live events artist or on-site calligrapher. I am always open to chatting with brands for activations, corporate event planners or really anyone who is planning an event or party (small to big events) who might want a calligrapher on-site creating a fun experience for their guests! I also do corporate gifting (personalizing items for gifts), or personal commissions. So if you’re looking for a fun and unique experience to add to your event, I’d love to collaborate!
