Meet Amanda Howell Whitehurst

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amanda Howell Whitehurst. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Amanda, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

It’s easy to compare yourself to other artists, and I’ve definitely fallen into that trap during my artistic journey. Over time, I had to shift my perspective and ask myself important questions: What did I want to achieve in my art? How did I want people to recognize my work as uniquely mine? What style did I want to be known for? These reflections helped me focus on developing my own voice as an artist.

I had a clear vision in my mind of what I wanted to create and the impact I wanted my work to have. So, I committed to honing my craft until I could confidently say, “This is me. This is how I want to be recognized.” Once I reached that point, I gained the freedom to create authentically—knowing that what I love to make will resonate with someone out there who loves it too.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a visual artist, I love exploring diverse media and styles to craft dynamic portrayals of Black women. Through digital paintings, comics, and oil and gouache works, my art celebrates the beauty, strength, confidence, and diversity of Black womanhood in its many forms. I’m deeply inspired by the stories, cultures, and experiences of Black women, as well as by movies, music, and other elements of popular Black culture. I enjoy reimagining these cultural touchstones and presenting them in fresh, innovative ways through my illustrations.

Creativity fuels me, and I’m committed to keeping the momentum strong into the New Year. I’m excited about the new opportunities and possibilities on the horizon!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most essential qualities that have guided me in my artistic journey are consistency, study, and—did I mention?—consistency. That’s how vital it is to me. I make it a point to draw every single day, no matter the scale of the project. Even a quick sketch counts because every stroke contributes to growth. I’ve come to see drawing as akin to working out; it builds strength, sharpens skills, and uncovers new techniques.

Like many new artists, I once struggled to find my “style.” Over time, I realized that style isn’t something you search for—it emerges naturally through consistent practice. My advice to anyone seeking their artistic voice is simple: create regularly. Study the work of artists you admire. Notice how they use shapes, colors, and techniques, and apply those lessons to your own creations. With time and patience, you’ll develop a style that’s authentically yours. Trust the process and be kind to yourself as you grow.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I have to say, my husband and my mother have been my greatest supporters. My mom has always been a source of encouragement, offering me affirming words that uplift my confidence in my art. Meanwhile, my husband is my partner in creativity, constantly brainstorming with me and finding ways to help grow my business as an artist. Their support is incredibly motivating.

Having people who believe in you this way is a true blessing, especially as an artist. Creating art is deeply time-consuming and demands intense focus, often pulling your attention from other areas of life. Their understanding of my dedication to this craft makes the journey even more rewarding, and I’m endlessly grateful for that.
