We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amari Leath a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amari, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I come from a family of educated hard workers. My grandfather was an entrepreneur who worked very hard, and my parents also worked very hard. I got my first job shortly after I turned sixteen, and I realized that if I worked hard, good things would happen.
There was a period of time when I was working three jobs. When I first got into photography, I worked at a senior portrait photo studio. When I first started, I didn’t get a lot of hours, so I worked two other jobs. I owed my high school tuition because it was a private school, and they wouldn’t give me my transcript until I paid it. So I worked for a year, and my family helped me pay off the balance. I didn’t like the feeling of being stuck working three jobs, so that motivated me to hone my craft in order to be successful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I consider myself to be a digital media visionary. I do photography, videography, and graphic design. I find it exciting to turn everyday moments into art. I also love making my clients look like celebrities. I always strive to deliver a great experience that is fun and enjoyable.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, persistence, and professionalism have played a huge part in my success. It is crucial to be patient. Climbing a mountain takes time. You may not realize it immediately, but taking small steps will still take you to your destination. Persistence is required in any field. You have to follow up. Opportunities can arise simply because you showed that you really wanted it by constantly following up. Lastly, professionalism is what separates you from the rest. I am a firm believer that by simply wearing a suit, you show that you truly care.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I have recently relocated to New York to attend graduate school. All of my clients are in Jacksonville, Florida, along with my photo studio. I am currently deciding whether to close my studio or rent it out. It is a difficult decision to make because I invested a lot of time and money into it, but I am currently entering a new chapter in my life and it’s going to take some time to get adjusted.
