Meet Amaya Johnson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amaya Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amaya below.

Amaya, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?

My self-discipline came from wanting better for myself and my business. I keep my schedule strict so I can meet all of my goals. I try to complete everything on my daily/weekly to-do list. I post every day on my social media. I’m sure to complete all of my school assignments on time. Creating a balance for everything in your life contributes toward self- discipline and success.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My brand is Meraki By Maya, where I hand-make clothes to make girls feel like the best versions of themselves. I am a fashion designer and seamstress. I specialize in formal wear and alterations. The product I’m most known for is my reversible satin bonnets that I started making in 2020. In the future, I plan to expand my satin collection with satin pillowcases.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three quality skills or areas of knowledge that were the most impactful on my journey is the ability to learn from videos, not being afraid to try new things, and always being willing to learn to do more. For the people who are early on in their journey, watch as many videos on social media and gain as much knowledge as you can. The amount of things you can learn is endless. Don’t be afraid to try things you’ve never done before, because you might like it, get good at it, and stick with it. You can turn your hobby into a career. You just would need a little self- discipline.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I’m overwhelmed with orders or even just life, I take a day to myself. In that day, I won’t any type of work or sewing related activities. I do things like relax, sleep, go get food, just small things to take my mind off of the hassle. Take a step out and breathe. At the end of the day, I make a plan for what I’ll do the next day to get things done efficiently.
