Amber, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience was shaped long before I ever realized I would need it. I grew up watching my mother raise four children on her own, and from a very young age I admired her strength, her work ethic, and her ability to keep showing up for us no matter how heavy life became. She never complained, never backed down from responsibility, and never allowed circumstances to define what was possible for our family.

Seeing that kind of perseverance every day planted something deep within me. It taught me that challenges aren’t signals to stop—they’re invitations to rise. It taught me that grace and grit can coexist. And most importantly, it showed me what it looks like to lead with love while still pushing forward with determination.

So whenever I face obstacles in business, motherhood, or my personal journey, I draw from the example my mother set. Her resilience became the blueprint for my own. It’s the foundation that allows me to keep evolving, keep creating, and keep showing up with intention—no matter what comes my way.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am the owner and lead loctician of Beauty Defined, a Houston-based brand dedicated to helping men, women, and children embrace, maintain, and celebrate their natural loc journeys. I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 14 years, and what began as a passion for hair naturally evolved into a deeper calling to uplift people through confidence, consistency, and education. Three years ago, I officially launched Beauty Defined, and it has grown into a space known for professionalism, expertise, and meaningful transformation.

What excites me most about my work is the impact I get to make. Locs are more than a hairstyle; they represent identity, patience, culture, and growth. Being trusted to guide someone through that journey is something I’ll never take for granted. Whether I’m installing microlocs, maintaining long-term clients, correcting damage, or educating someone on proper care, I truly enjoy being part of their evolution. The moment when a client looks in the mirror and finally sees the version of themselves they’ve been waiting for is always the highlight of my day.

Beauty Defined stands out because of the experience and integrity behind the service. Over the years, I’ve become known for consistent results, detailed consultations, and an approach that makes clients feel seen, respected, and cared for. I have earned over 500 five-star reviews by staying committed to excellence, never rushing appointments, and avoiding one-size-fits-all solutions. Every client receives a customized experience, and that is something I take great pride in.

This upcoming year, I’m focused on expansion. I’ve been growing my digital presence with educational content, tutorials, and transformation videos that allow me to connect with people far beyond Houston. I am also developing new digital products and resources designed to support both clients and aspiring locticians. My long-term vision is to expand Beauty Defined into a full suite of services and educational tools, including advanced training and mentorship for those entering the loc industry.

At the heart of everything I do is a simple mission: to help people feel beautiful, confident, and defined in their own unique way. Beauty Defined is more than a brand. It is a reflection of the people I serve and the passion I bring to this work every day.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, the three qualities that have had the biggest impact on my journey are consistency, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to continual learning.

Consistency has been the foundation of my success. Showing up, delivering quality work, and maintaining high standards day after day is what builds trust and a strong reputation. For anyone starting out, focus on steady habits and reliable effort. Consistency is what separates those who grow from those who give up too soon.

Emotional intelligence has also been essential. In this industry, you are not just working with hair, you are working with people. Learning how to listen, communicate, and create a safe, positive experience for clients makes all the difference. Developing emotional intelligence begins with understanding yourself and being intentional about how you treat others.

The third key has been my commitment to learning. Even with years of experience, I stay curious and open to new techniques, new information, and new ways of growing. The beauty industry evolves quickly, and staying relevant means always being a student. For anyone early in their journey, invest in your craft and never stop learning.

These three qualities have guided my growth and helped me create a brand rooted in excellence, care, and continuous improvement.

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is someone who values their loc journey and understands that healthy, beautiful results come from consistency, patience, and proper maintenance. They appreciate professionalism, respect the time and expertise behind the service, and show up ready to collaborate in creating the best outcome for their hair.

An ideal client is also someone who is open to guidance. I love working with people who are willing to learn, ask questions, and trust the process. Locs are an evolving journey, and clients who follow care recommendations and invest in their maintenance always see the most transformative results.

Most importantly, my ideal client is someone who values the experience just as much as the final look. Beauty Defined is a space built on respect, comfort, and connection. Clients who honor policies, communicate clearly, and come in with a positive, open mindset help create an atmosphere where we can both do our best work.
